"Are you kidding me?" Austin says, rubbing his temples. "You were having a bonfire?" A few pack members stand in front of us, staring sheepishly at the floor.
"Why didn't you invite us?" I add, earning a sharp look from Austin.
"Where's Kaitlyn?" I ask, changing the subject. The last time I saw her was last night, before we retired into our rooms. We look around for the blonde girl.
I motion to Austin to split up, so we can look for her much faster.
I find her at the treeline.
She's sitting on the ground, playing with the grass.
"Hey," I say, plopping down on the ground beside her.
She doesn't respond.
"You okay?" I ask, even though it's pretty obvious she isn't.
Kaitlyn nods, then thinks twice and shakes her head.
"Wanna talk about it?" I prod.
She shakes her head. We stay silent for a long while, watching a squirrel run around.
I take a deep breath. It's now or never. "What happened between you and Hunter?" I ask, keeping my eyes on the woodland creature.
I see Kaitlyn shift uncomfortably in the corner of my eye. She clears her throat and sighs.
"Well?" I push, impatience starting to take over.
"I had a sister, once," she starts, her voice cracking at the mention of her sister. I stay silent, listening to her every word.
"She was the best sister ever. Then she met this guy. He made her so happy. One day, he finally decided to propose to her. He had gotten permission from my parents and everything. Then she met Holt. Everything went crumbling down. Holt basically forced her to go with him. She cracked under pressure, and eventually jumped off a bridge."
I stare at her, trying to let the new knowledge sink in.
"So you still blame Hunt-Holt?" I say, unsure of what to call Hunter/Holt.
Kaitlyn nods and wipes away her tears. "We should head back," she says suddenly, standing up and dusting off her jeans. I do the same and we walk back to the mansion in silence.
"Why did you kidnap me?" I ask out of the blue.
"We wanted to use you as bait for your brothers," she replies with ease, though she looks uncomfortable with the subject.
"Why?"
Kaitlyn shrugs. "We thought they would come to your rescue, but apparently your mate beat them to it."
"If they ever tried to come to my rescue," I mutter, not loud enough for her to overhear. I realize she didn't answer my question. We arrive at the mansion and Kaitlyn leaves me alone at the front door.
Austin finds me there after a few minutes.
"I'm scared," I say. Austin raises an eyebrow in confusion.
