Samantha cried for the first time in a very long time. She didn't cry much anymore, even when her father hit her the hardest. But nothing she'd ever felt compared to him when he was drunk.

Even though he didn't drink much, every time he did, he drank too much. He ended up taking it out on Sam. Sam put her hands up instinctively to protect herself.

"Please.. stop!" She cried.

Dave Pillar grunted, "would you rather me beat your sister??"

Sam shook her head fearfully. That was the thing about Sam. She was loyal to her sister, and begged her father to beat her twice in the place of him touching her twin sister, Cassie. And he agreed.

Her adopted father had begun beating Sam when she was 7, when his wife died. For the past 8 years, this nasty cycle continued.

When he was finished beating Sam harshly, he shoved her into her room. Sam hit the floor with a thud, sniffling and numb. She slowly pushed herself up and began to nurse her wounds.

This was a more severe beating. Her wrist was probably sprained, but perhaps just twisted. He'd taken a knife to her, too. There would probably be a new scar on her arm in the morning.

Outside her door, she could hear Mr. Pillar stomping and cursing. Cassie ran out of her room at the sound of all the commotion.

"What's going on?" Cassie asked. As soon as she caught a whiff of the alcohol, she cringed, regretting leaving the safety of her room.

Dave sighed. "Your sister got a bad grade, so she's staying in her room. Here, come, let's see your grades," He said as he led the cautious, frightened girl into his room.

Sam sat on her bed, calming down with her old walkman and a pair of headphones--the nicest things she owned.

She couldn't take much more of this...

A few weeks later, while Mr. Pillar was MIA, Sam went into Cassie's room. "Cass, we gotta talk."

"Where's dad???" Cassie said with a little look of fear in her eyes, she hid it well, however.

"Not home yet, which means he'll probably be drunk," Sam frowned. "Look, we need to take this time to find our parents.. our real parents. We always talked about it, so let's just do it."

"How? All the sites take credit cards, and he won't let us have one until we're eighteen."

Sam held up a credit card. "Snuck this from his dresser this morning."

"What were you doing in his room this morning?" Cassie asked suspiciously.

A moment of silence passed. Then Sam, quite obviously, lied and said, "oh, uh, I just had to, uh, ask him a question... that's it. But anyways, let's get to work."

Cassie sent a suspecting glare to Sam as she pulled out her laptop from under her bed. No one except for Sam knew she had it. Together, with the use of their adopted father's credit card, they searched ancestry sights until they found their biological parents.

"What a strange name," Sam said when they had some results. "Anthony DiNozzo? Must be Italian."

Cassie snorted. "Yeah, and what type of name did our mother have? Ziva?? Never heard it before."

"Here's our father's address," Sam said as she scribbled it down. She stood quickly. "Dad will be home any minute. We have to be gone before he gets home."

"Where are we going?" Cassie closed her laptop, alert to Sam's sudden movement.

"Duh! To find our dad! Our real dad!"

Cassie gasped, horrified, "No! We can't! That'll just make our dad mad. And you don't want to see him mad."

Sam's eyes widened. She'd always suspected her adopted father had been lying to her about not beating Cassie. "Why do you say that???"

"He's just really loud when he gets mad," Cassie corrected herself.

Sam let out a sigh of fake relief. "It doesn't matter. We will be gone before he can get loud. Now pack a bag."

Both girls packed bags quickly, then sneaked out the front door. They only took necessities, since they were going to be traveling a bit.

As they ran down the sidewalk, they saw their adopted father's car turn on the other side of the street. Sam's heart beat so fast. Her head was spinning with adrenaline as she turned to Cassie.

"I can't believe we're doing this..."

Cassie nodded, then pulled her Hoodie over her head. "What if he doesn't want us?"

"Then we live on our own." Sam tugged down her own sleeves, reminding herself of the reasons they were leaving. "We can't go back, not after this... no matter what happens tomorrow morning... we'll always be Sisters Forever."
