I spent the rest of the night with Rory teaching her how to hunt like the wolf she is meant to be. She's born with beta blood and is a natural fighter, she just needed to know how to bring that instinct into hunting.
We tracked down two bunnies, the first my wolf pounced on because hers was too timid. But when we found the second she did it on her own, her wolf howling in joy. I made her hunt a deer next, a young mother. Her wold was hesitant, not wanting to kill the young mother. She didn't understand the need to eat. The prey and the predator. She needs to be truly hungry to understand the want to eat. She didn't go for the kill so the beast did – no sympathy from the wolf that never got any herself.
With a promise to help her again, the wolves part for the night.
I arrived at my father's pack very late in the night. The streets were quiet, lights were off, families away for the night. As approach closer to the pack house I can hear rough voices on the main floor. The few people awake are yelling back and forth but I can't seem to understand what.
I decide to walk through the back doors to avoid confrontation with whomever was fighting in the living room. I quietly walk through the kitchen and make it towards the stairs before my name is called.
"Lux!"
I stand still for a second and contemplate how I could get myself out of this situation. I mean I've been a ghost for nearly three years, why do they need me now all of a sudden?
"Lux!" My father yells again, a commanding Alpha this time.
I walk slowly into the main room where I see my father, his beta and his main warrior all standing in tense poses – the current predicament effecting them all.
"Alpha." I nod my head as he senses my presence. All three men are looking at me as if I'm the scum of the earth – all that I have become in this pack. I don't refer to him as my father – he doesn't deserve that title any longer.
"Where have you been the last few days?" He booms.
"Out." I tell him in short.
"How could you be so irresponsible? You were gone for days and no one knew where you went! Have you no care for your brother's safety? Anything could have happened to him."
For someone who hasn't cared about my whereabouts in three years, he sure seems concerned now.
"I'm sorry for endangering your precious future." I tell him, trying to tone down the sarcasm. "But as you'll notice, he is just fine. No danger towards your precious heir."
"And what if something did happen, filth?" The beta, Elick, yells. "Our pack would have been without a future because of you."
Just then, Isaac and a few other of the wolves his age stumble through the door, the stench of alcohol and girls all over them.
"Your heir can't handle a pack, he can hardly handle himself." I scoff. That triggers something in the lead warrior, Alois. He lunges at me and grabs me by the throat. My back is pressed against the wall while he squeezes harder. An evil smile takes over my face, knowing full well what this is doing to my brother.
"Alois, let her down." My father says carefully.
"She's filth, Levi. She needs to be put down." The grip on my throat is tightened and I can feel my airways slowly closing. Keeping my eyes open becomes a task itself and my breaths are short and quick. Another smile is put onto my face when I hear a thump behind him.
"Look at," I start with a quick breath. "Your precious," another breath. "Alpha." And with one last breath comes out as a cough and a chuckle.
"Alois." It's the beta this time, a warning. Alois drops me on the floor and I crumple down, a stupid smile still on my face. I'm laughing at the demise of my brother, something evil has taken over me.
The same time a full breath is taken into my lungs, the same happens to my brother.
"You're playing with fire now, Alpha." I spit at my father. He would have been better off to leave me alone. Ironic he was worried about his son's safety when I was away but the only time he is injured is when I am here with him.
This time it's my father who lunges at me, his hand pulled back and slapped across my face. The only hit that will truly hurt – Alpha on Alpha. He grabs the collar of my shirt and pulls me back up. He's about to go back in for another hit but I speak before he has the chance.
"Do it I dare you" I yell towards my father. "Yell at me, starve me, whip me. I dare you!"
Another day of my life where I am blamed for something I cannot control. A punching bag in my father's worst moods. I haven't taken it from him in a long time and never would he dare lay a finger on me. I know this to be true – he is too worried about his future. "Just remember what your abuse does to him." I nod over to my brother who is now barely standing on his own, one of his friends at each of his sides. There is a prominent red mark shaped like a hand on his face and I know he's hurting too.
"Your mother should have killed you when she had the chance." He spits.
"And she should have left you when she realized what a monster you are." My father drops me on the floor but this time I am strong enough to stand on both feet. "The women upstairs is not my mother. She is an empty shell because of the destruction you caused."
"Levi do not be threatened by her, stop before you do something you regret." Elick says calmly, the trio's voice of reason.
My father stares at me in the eyes for a second but I don't look away. He's looking for submission but he will not get it from me. I hold his stare until he is finally pulled from me. The beta, warrior and Alpha all walk away and towards their rooms. It's now just my brother, his friends and I. They all have something to say but are all too scared to say it.
"Go ahead, be a big wolf and say it." I threaten. Neither friend can hold my eye contact, they're aware of who I am, of my true rank.
I look at my brother next and he holds my stare. His look is pure hatred though, no love for his sister. If looks could kill. Any part of the relationship I used to have with my brother died right then and there. The brother-sister relationship that once existed is no more. He walks away from me and I know he's left that respect he once had for me in the living room. No looking back.
These are my first steps to a very long and hard journey. I have a purpose and I need to find it. I have my mama and my sister depending on me. I have the future of a crumbing pack that depends on me. And who knows, there might be even more. I might even have the moon depending on me.
I need to accept this roll and I need to discover what this purpose is.
