It seemed a bit different now that he was gone. When she walked the halls Rey could feel her stomach drop as she watched her classmates laugh and talk as if his disappearance had't fazed them. But the thing is, it hadn't. They could care less about the whereabouts of Ben Solo, boy who was here for only a month or so.
But she cared, and she hated it. Rey shouldn't care, he was just a guy, an incredibly sweet guy who risked his radio show to help her get together with her high school crush. She sighed walking into the last class of the day. While it was her favorite class, the fact that he wasn't in the usual seat behind her it hurt, it made the class seem less enjoyable. Maybe the whole reason she liked it was because he was there. The smiles and silly faces that made her giggle when the teacher's back was turned.
"Rey Kenobi, do you know what the currency of the cell is?'
She gulped, looking behind her, her eyes met with empty space.
"ATP..."
"Good job."
The teacher wrote the answer down on the chalk board. Rey then zoned out. It was only the loud ringing of the final bell that managed to bring her out from her thoughts. The ringing seemed to have sounded like an old telephone, maybe that's why her head jerked up from the desk. A phone call. That's how it all started.
"Heartbreak Hotline, how may I help you?"
Rey choked up after hearing his voice, it sounded more distant but it was still his voice. That would always be enough.
"I need help."
A few more moments of silence seemed to have followed, Rey held her breath.
"With what?"
"I don't exactly know, I-."
"How can I help you if you don't even know your problem?"
"I don't know...I'm sorry."
"Don't worry about it, just next time, actually have a problem." He sounded deflated and tired. Rey wanted him there where she was, to be able to hold onto him and tell him that she was there.
But she couldn't.
"It won't happen again, I promise."
She hung up, slowly placing the phone down and opening Google.
Where is Heartbreak Hotline being recorded?
Los Angeles, California
"A long time from here I see..." Rey managed a chuckle before turning off her phone and tossing it lightly onto her bed.
"Maybe this move is for the best, you know? Maybe the universe s giving me a sign? That sometimes, things aren't meant to be."
She almost reached for her phone, to call him again but quickly pulled away. It wasn't worth it.
