I stopped talking. Why did I say that?
"Has something else been going on that we weren't aware of?" He didn't sound or look demanding. Just confused. And concerned.
"No," I said "Just being lost. That's it."
So the day continued on, and for some reason, Joel and Luke felt like something I never really felt I had before.
A family.
But no, that would never happen. If they figured out that I didn't have a family, what would they do? They'd put me in an orphanage. I had to make them think that I have a family, anxiously waiting for their little girl to come home. When in reality, they're probably throwing a "Good Riddance" party and we speak.
Finally, it was time to camp out again. We found a nice place to camp out and set up everything again. Joel called a meeting in the tent before we went to sleep.
"I think we've been forgetting to pray," he said "We've forgotten that this is all in the Savior's hands."
"I agree," said Luke "We need to pray every night from now on."
"Okay," I said, trying with all my might to make it seem like I wasn't cringing.
"Alright, I'll start." said Joel. Then he said this amazing prayer. I could never pray like that.
Then Luke said an equally amazing prayer, but it was different than Joel's.
When it was my turn, I said nothing. Joel and Luke looked up and opened their eyes.
"Is something wrong?" Luke said
"Nope! Nothing is wrong."
"Is this not your religion?" Joel asked
"Nope! It's my religion."
"Then why don't you say a prayer?"
"Nope! Long story."
"Come on, please? For us?"
"Every time I pray, the opposite happens."
"Come on, it can't be that bad." Luke said.
"If you say so," I said "But don't say I didn't warn you."
My prayer was short and simple.
"Dear Lord, I pray that we are all safe from harm. Amen." Then I held my breath and waited for the bad to happen.
"See," Luke said "There's nothing to wo-"
He was interrupted by a huge roar coming from the woods.
I let out a huge sigh. My life sucks so much that a bear about to kill me and my most favorite people in the world seems just about normal.
A bear poked it's head into our tent. Joel and Luke, frightened, went to the back of the tent. I just stayed there. We were dead meat anyways.
"Celeste!" Luke shouted "What are you doing!?"
I didn't answer him. The bear grabbed me by the collar and dragged me out of the tent.
"No!" I heard Joel scream.
I decided to name him Gerald. Just for fun. Gerald the bear. He just looked like a Gerald.
The bear was over me, roaring into my face. What did I do to it that made it so mad at me?
Both Joel and Luke tried to help, but every time they did, the bear took a huge swipe at them, and they were forced to jump back.
"Celeste, you can't die now!" Luke shouted "Please, You have to fight back!"
I looked at him and I saw tears in his eyes.
"Please," he whispered.
Well, that was enough for me. Now I HAD to fight back. Not just for me. For Luke and Joel. Because finally, I had people who cared about me.
When the bear roared in my face again, I grabbed a rock and threw it as hard as I could into its mouth. It stopped roaring, and as it choked, trying to get the rock out, I escaped from under it. I tried to run, but somehow the bear was faster than me. I poked it in its eyes. It hesitated but then took a huge swipe and cut my stomach. You could see the three streaks of blood.
I fell to the ground, almost unable to breathe. The bear was on top of me again, probably getting ready to have its next meal. All that matters is that I tried. For Luke and Joel.
I heard Joel and Luke screaming. My name. The begs for me not to die. For me to keep fighting. But it was done.
Just when I thought it was over, I heard a hiss. I turned to see my cat, hunched in its warning position.
The bear looked at the cat and snarled. I wanted to help somehow, but everything started going dizzy.
The cat started swiping at the bear, making it bleed. It finally ran away.
The world was so dizzy, I couldn't see much anymore. Two figures that I heavily assumed were Luke and Joel ran up to me. One checked my stomach and the other put his ear to my heart.
"Celeste, stay with us!" I heard Joel shout.
"Please! We need you!" Luke said.
Then I passed out.Ahh yay!! Luke the cat is a hero!
