We woke up early and went as quickly as possible so we could make it to civilization faster. We were joking around until I suggested that we should start singing.
We sang all of the Run Wild. Live Free. Love Strong. album, except for Without You because we knew especially Luke would get emotional. Sometimes I sang Joel's part, and sometimes I sang Luke's part, and sometimes I made up my own part so we could have a three-way harmony. It sounded great. It was fun.
I think we bonded strongly during that bike ride session.
Soon, we saw a small store ahead. We were so happy! Our calls kept failing, but it was okay. We could use that as a way to get home!
First, we had to cross a railroad crossing. Joel and I got across, but then the bars went down, and the train crossed.
The train felt like it took years to cross. When it finally passed, Luke was nowhere to be seen.
"Luke?" we called his name about three times before Joel spotted some guy riding Luke's bike with a human sized and moving bag.
It didn't take a genius to figure out where Luke was.
I rode my bike at full speed to catch up with the guy.
"Hey!" I yelled "I know you're not gonna stop, but can you at least give us the bag?"
The cat was having a blast. His fur and ears were being blown so hard. I rode my bike in front of him so he was forced to stop.
"Stop! Get off of the bike." I was certain that he couldn't run away.
That is, until he took out a gun and shot me in the shoulder. It wasn't fatal, but it did hurt really badly. I fell off of the bike clutching my shoulder and trying hard not to cry. The guy just pedaled off with Luke.
I got back on my bike and tried to ride, but my left arm(I'm a lefty) was too numb to steer. I tried riding my bike anyways, and I hit a curb and fell over.
Joel came speeding to come help me.
"Forget me, Joel!" I told him "I'm sure I'll be here when you come back. Go get Luke."
"No! I'm not gonna let you just rot here! Besides, you found me!"
"That's because we had leads! We knew what the guy looked like. We knew his motives. And even more, we knew about the tracker. That was the only way we could've found you!" I looked ahead, but I didn't see the guy with the bike. "We don't even know what corner he turned in." I rolled over and sighed. "I failed. Again. I've failed so many times. I'm just a walking failure."
"Why are you saying that? You're not a failure!"
"Just stop. Thanks to me, we just lost Luke. I should've been patient and waited with him."
"How does someone kidnap someone that tall anyway?"
"Wait... Are these tire marks?"
"Yeah!"
"Dear Lord, thank you for dirt roads." I got up and tried to get on my bike, but Joel stopped me.
"Wait. You can't get on. You don't know how to ride the bike one-handed. You'll fall and hurt yourself more than you already are."
"Joel, I will learn anything for someone I love. Please let me try this."
"Well... Okay... But-"
"Thank you! I can see why you can't trust me with your life. You can barely trust me with my own." I wasn't serious when I said that, but I wasn't really cracking a joke either. Oh well. Anything dumb that I say won't be in my worries in the orphanage.
I got on the bike and started practicing riding with one hand, until finally I got it.
"See, Joel? I can do this!"
"I'm proud of you. I seriously didn't think you could do it in that little amount of time. Now, onwards to find Luke."
I started smiling because that was the first time anyone had told me that they were proud of me. Then I realised that Joel and Luke gave me a lot of things that I wouldn't've had otherwise.
With that thought in mind, I set off with Joel to take back Luke.I hope he's gonna be okay...
