We decided that we would sleep in shifts: One stands out watch while the other two sleep.
It was really awkward. Then again, what about this situation wasn't?
On my shift, being how I am, I collected an army of rocks. Anything I see that moves is getting pelted with rocks. Why did they trust a twelve-year-old to guard their lives anyway? Joel and Luke were very close together. It was actually kind of adorable.
The cat was shifting from on top of Joel's stomach to on top of Luke's, then he finally curled up into a ball and started sleeping on Luke's face. I wouldn't help but laugh.
Then, I saw something moving. It was coming towards me. I got a rock nice and ready. Then, a bunny hopped out of the bushes. I rolled my eyes. Just a bunny. I was afraid of a bunny.  I started humming No Turning Back over and over again. This was boooriing.
When my shift  ended I woke up Joel and he got up slowly to begin his shift. I lay down on the side Joel was on and Luke started snuggling close to me. The uncomfortableness made me kind of shrink.
"I'm not Joel, Luke." I thought "I'm. Not. Joel."
He was too heavy to push away. Oh well, it was pretty cold out anyway, and there wasn't much of a blanket.
I was awake when Joel's shift ended. When he looked at Luke, he laughed because the cat was still on top of his face.
He gently shook Luke awake, who gasped loudly.
"I dreamt that I was being suffocated, then I wake up and realize that I am!" he said, gently picking the cat up from his face. We all laughed.
Joel was a lot more different than Luke. Joel kept taking the covers from me. Once I yanked it from him with all of my might, and he curled up into a little ball, a lot like the cat's. We had a tug-of-war with the blanket.
"Why can't you just give me the blanket? I'm freezing!"
"You're talking to the one who has 80 degree winters."
"I was the one stranded in the woods for two days!"
"Just give me the blanket!"
"Come on!"
Luke turned around and laughed at us.
"You guys are hopeless." he chuckled.
"Well Joel won't give me the blanket!"
"Says the one that won't give ME the blanket."
Finally Joel gave one huge tug and it made me fall over. We all started laughing.
"Well, I think we've had enough sleep." Joel said "Why don't we just talk about ourselves?"
I know he meant why don't I say something about myself because Luke is his brother.
"I guess since you so obviously gestured towards me," I said, smiling "I'll go. But what is there to say?"
"What did you like to do?"
"Tons. Writing music, singing, playing instruments, playing all kinds of sports, drawing, painting, reading... People told me I was very well-rounded."
"Sounds like you are."
"What about your family?" Luke asked.
I cringed. "I lived with my mom, dad, sister, and baby brother. I'm the middle child."
"Mhm."
"I have a pet dog and a pet cat, who seemed to follow me here."
"What about friends?"
"Didn't have many. But I had one best friend, and her name was Elli."
"Had? Was?"
"Well, our bus one day... It fell off of a bridge and... I was the only survivor." I felt like crying. Elli didn't deserve to die. I did.
I feel like Joel and Luke could see my pain, so they both scooted closer to me and put their arms around my shoulders. But, see, the problem is that when people do that you just wanna cry more. A single tear dropped on my lap.
That's it? Just a tear? From all of that pain?
"I'm sorry that that happened to you."
"It's... Alright. I was able to power through everything else, I can power through this."
"What do you mean by everything else?"

Bad choice of words, Celeste.
