"Ugh, what's taking them so long? It's fucking cold," Bobcat whined, her shivering fingers trying to hold the cigarette steady against her chapped lips. I stayed sheltered beneath the bushy leaves clinging on to a tree somehow immune to the new winter months, my arms crossed over my chest, Jude's jacket hanging on my shoulders.
"Maybe they're not gonna show up after all," I shrugged, wishing for just that to be the case. I really, really didn't want to face him, especially after just promising myself yesterday not to be around him anymore. I guessed now I could at least return his jacket and get him out of my life for good.
I was scared of what I saw, scared of the way I felt. The idea of needing someone terrified me, especially after the only one I have ever loved, my mother, left me. I didn't want to grow attached.
"They'll show up," Bobcat insisted, lacing her fingers through her puffy hair.
"Can I go?"
"Shut up."
I murmured a curse, angrily tugging at the tips of my hair. It had been ages since I spiked it up, I almost felt like a new, sadder human without the effort I applied into my appearance so many times before. I missed my hair. I planned on doing it when I returned home.
"Oh, hey!" Bobcat suddenly shouted, her arm jerking up above her head. "They're here," she swatted at my arm, then proceeded to wave the two shadowy figures over. I groaned, pulling my hood over my head, averting my eyes to glare at the ground, at the trees, at the sky— anywhere other than his face.
"Hey guys!" Jasper's excited shrieks jumped out from the cover of his distance, the fog shrouding him almost entirely.
Their footsteps grew louder, as Bobcat tossed out her cig and advanced toward them with the youth like excitement of a Girl Scout. "You made it! Nice to see you again, Jasper." She greeted. I stayed staring at the ground. "And you must be...Jude." Her tone suddenly changed, softer.
"Yeah, hey." Hearing the deep tone of his voice had me on edge.
"Oh, we talked on the phone." Her voice was silky, seductive. I knew what was happening and it was enough to make me actually roll my eyes. He turned her on, just his presence was enough to get her attracted. I couldn't lie, it was understandable.
"Coyote, hey! I have so much to talk to you about," Jasper approached me, very giddy. His smile stretched over his face from ear to ear. I managed a small smile.
"I bet," I responded, rubbing my shoulder with my hand. I allowed myself to use this moment to peek over his shoulder at the man causing me so much anxiety. Bobcat was going on and on about some bullshit that no one cared about, but Jude's eyes weren't on her. He was looking at me, smiling. He was warm. He was a hot summers day and I was melting.
