"What on earth are you two doing?" I approached the two grown men standing and yelling at a claw machine. The two grown men being my wonderful boyfriend and older cousin.
Amanda wanted to take Jesse somewhere for her birthday, which meant the entire squad sitting together in a Chucky Cheeses with the only children being Noah and Jesse. But now, I was considering Sonny and Rafael apart of that group.
Sonny hit the side of the machine three times before running his fingers through his already gelled back hair. "The machine duped us out of seven dollars already."
"It was my seven dollars, Carisi." Rafael nonchalantly added as he slid a dollar into the machine filled with stuffed animals.
"Ok..." I continued approaching with two cups of Coca Cola they'd sent me off to get for them. This was while they were eating pizza at the table. Now, they were engulfed in the group of screeching and hopping around child. I'd already drunk hald of Rafael's soda before actually handing it off to him.
Sonny happily hummed as he sipped his drink and death glared at the purple bunny that sat on top of various other oddly colored animals. Rafael, however, shook the cup and let the ice rattle in the lack of actually soda. "Cariño, I asked for Coke not ice."
I leaned against the glass of the claw machine. "Well the search for man-children got kinda hard and I was thirsty."
Giggling the excuse instead of the apology Rafael likely expected caught him off gaurd. Yet instead of a snarky remark, he went back to his undeniably failing attempts at grappling the purple bunny. Sonny scared me with how he was starring down the mocking toy.
"What on earth is going on over here?" I spun to see Olivia holding her wide eyed Noah.
"They've ascended into they're long gone child hood." I laughed as Sonny turned his death glare to me. Rafael likely wanted to but he'd finally got a hold on his target.
"Lo tengo!" Rafael startled us all. We all directed our attention to the prize he'd finally snagged from the machine. "Here you go cariño."
He shoved it in my direction with a smug smile on his face. "You're kidding? You just spent forever getting this."
He simply shrugged his shoulders and turned to scan over the children until he caught a glance of Amanda and Jess on the mini carousel. As he walked across the randomly colored carpet and dodged little hyper children, I excused myself to the bathroom.
Ding. Can you bring me the file I gave you on the Robins' case? I think you took them home, they aren't at your desk.
Damn. Pippa and I had finally closed out that case. I brought the papers involved home since Rafael had a big case he was proud of and I wanted to have some work to show for.
I quickly typed a reply saying I'd be there in a half an hour before setting out to find Rafael. He was my ride. All this time I've lived with him and I still hadn't bothered looking for a car or an apartment. Because, in all honesty, is living together was a bad thing when we also worked together. I sure did love the man though.
"Rafi!" I finally found him sitting at the table, sitting across from Olivia. Sonny, Amanda, Jesse, and Noah were all in a huddle around a nearby game machine.
As I got to the table, I seen Rafael quickly shove something into his pocket and looked up at me nervously. When he opened his mouth to say something, I heard a baby babble behind me, "Omi!"
Jessie had started calling me that a few weeks ago and every once in a while, Sonny or Rafael would call me that as a joke.
"Hi Jessie!" I crouched down and picked her up, bouncing her a bit before Amanda took her from me and thanked me for keeping her still. Jessie must've wondered off from her.
I turned back to Rafael, who stood and smiled. "Yes?"
"I need to go back to the house, then to the court house." I gave him my best innocent smile to try and convince him silently.
We'd always try not to ditch occasions due to work but we weren't perfect. Rafael would leave on Sundays because SVU got a case for him to consult. I'd have to leave early in the morning to prep for court with Pippa or whatever other counselor claimed me as their intern that day.
He tilted his head to the side a bit before fishing around in his pocket for his keys. "I'll just get a ride from Li- Sonny."
I took the keys from him suspiciously. "Ok, I'm sorry I have to go..."
"It's ok Naomi." He gave me a kiss on the forehead before turning me around by my shoulders.
Glancing back, I waved and left. What was he all fidgety about?-------
Pippa kept me for two hours, though I assumed she would've taken the file I gave her and let me leave.
When I finally got home, I just wanted to so to sleep. Well, shower, then probably stay up watching TV. That's usually what sleep meant for me.
But I guess my boyfriend had a different idea. I opened the door to what had been our shared apartment for a while now. There was three pink candles on the coffee table in the living room. The couch was covered with pink throw pillows that replaced the regular white ones that usually rested there.
Rafael walked out of the bedroom with his toothbrush hanging from his mouth. "You weren't supposed to be back yet." He was wearing sweatpants and a t shirt so whatever he had planned couldn't have been too fancy, eh"
"Sorry," I smiled as I shed my jacket onto the couch and sat my bag down next to it. "But what's with all the pink?"
He put his finger up, "Wait." Then he turned and walked back into the bathroom.
I stood there, waiting like he said, as I heard him gurgle and spit what I assumed was water. Had it been a few months ago, prior to me actually knowing him, I'd have guessed it was some scotch. Though I still sometimes think he has some stashed around.
When Rafael finally came back out, he grabbed my hand and pulled me over to the couch. But instead of sitting on it, he got down on one knee.
My heart started to pound at my chest with a sound that mimiced what I assumed Edgar Allan Poe wrote of in The Tell-Tale Heart.
"Naomi..."
"Rafael what are you doing?"
He smiled up at me from his kneel in front of me. "I love you."
"Rafael." I couldn't say anything else. I had no idea what to say. What could I say? All I knew is that my stomach was fluttering and I had a huge smile on my face.
"I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you-"
"Yes!" I blurted.
He chuckled a little. "Marry-"
"Yes!" I interrupted again.
"Me?" He finally finished.
"No."
"Wait what?" He stood with a confused look on his face.
I giggled and smiled widely, "I'm kidding, of course I will." I sprung forward and wrapped my arms around his neck. We hugged each other tightly for a moment before he pulled away and reached into his pocket for what I assumed was the ring.
"Oh you're kidding." He froze and looked down at the small wrapper in his hand.
I blinked at him before I looked down to see what he was staring at. I couldn't help but laugh when I seen what he was holding. "Is that a Ring Pop?"
"Jesse must've switched them when I left it on the table at Chucky Cheese." He mumbled, mostly to himself.
But I grabbed it and tore open the plastic to the light red candy inside. I slipped it around my ring finger where I'd put a real engagement ring. "I love it Rafi! It's beautiful!" I held my hand out and admired the Ring Pop.
"Cariño," He grabbed my hand and attempted taking off my "engagement" ring. "I'll go get the real one."
"No no." I yanked my hand back and held it to my chest. "I like this one."
Rafael smiled and kissed my forehead. "I don't think you can wear that to work."
I furrowed my eyebrows and sighed, "You're right. But if anyone asks, this Ring Pop is this real engagement ring."
"Whatever you say."•
