We will be there in two minutes, I hope you're ready.
I reread over Kates text, quickly throw the store bags and food cartons into the trash, anxious for what was to come next. I made one more check to see if everything was in order as I pick up a bouquet of roses and a heart shaped box of chocolates; cliché, I know.
The door swings open as she strolls in with Kate holding onto her arm. Luces eyes widen at the setting. tea lights filled the space with a soft glow.
"Woah, did you do all this for me?"
I nod, "Do you like it?" she smiles.
"I love it." Kate comes in and help her to the bed. She stays for a few minutes, checking up, making sure she's settled before saying goodbye and closing the door behind her.
"These are for you." I hand her the red roses.
"Thank you. You know I have to say, I'm very impressed with what you did to the place."
"Just a little improvising, with the help of some people of course."
"Makes spending Valentines day in a hospital, a little more comforting."
"Yeah." I move towards the T.V. "Anyway, we have a movie to watch."
"What movie?" she asks.
"The Longest Ride."
"Seriously?" she laughs.
"What? You said you wanted to watch it."
"No, you were the one who suggested it."
I roll my eyes, "Whatever, I hope you're hungry, Nana made some food for us."
"Yum!"
**********
"I cannot believe they killed off the old guy." Luce says at the ending credits.
"He was weak and old, of course he was going to die."
"But they shouldn't have, would've been a better ending."
"It was a good ending, Luke and Sophia got back together, they both got what they wanted."
"Whatever." she mumbles.
"You really got into it." I say.
"At least I didn't cry." She backfires.
The comeback made me chuckle, I take her empty paper plate and throw it away in the garbage.
"Shouldn't you be getting home, It's getting late."
"It's a Saturday, and I let her know I was going to be back late." I climb into the bed snuggling with her. Kissing her forehead in the process.
"Niall?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you ever think about the future?"
"Well recently, I have been."
"Really? Where do you see yourself in ten years?"
"Well, I would have my degree, working the job that I love. Possibly marriage, and a family." I start to wonder about the ring in my pocket.
"I'd say the same thing too. It sounds lovely to me, being a stay-at-home mom, with a couple kids and a loving husband."
"Yeah."
"Penny for your thoughts?"
"Mm?"
"What are you thinking about?" she asks.
"Something that I've been thinking about for a while now."
"Care to share with me?" I take a deep breath, glancing towards her. She's already looking up at me, waiting. I take a moment to admire her.
"I love you." I say.
She grins, "I love you."
"I've been thinking and stressing about this for a while, waiting, but I believe this a perfect opportunity."
"For?" she frowns.
"Luce, before I met you, I'd never imagined that one person, a single person, could change my life for the better. And then you walked into my life, and it just changed; you taught me how to love and most of all, to forgive and let go. I am who I am today, because of you. You saved me Luce. And because of that, I am deeply devoted to you, and I want to prove it right now." I reach into my pocket.
"Niall, wait!" She stops me. "We can't, I know you mean well, and I love you so much. But look at us, we're young and too unstable to get married. We're not ready, I'm not ready."
"Luce, I'm not asking you to marry me."
"You're not?"
"No." I pull out a silver band, just a simple band. "I'm giving you a promise ring."
"A what?"
"A promise ring, means that whatever happens to us, the ups and downs, the battles we will go through. I will always, always come back to you. So I'm asking, will you stick with me through those battles?"
She looks at the silver band, taking it gently from my hand to observe it. She then slides the ring onto her ring finger, fitting perfectly.
"Always and forever." she smiles.
We lean in for a tender kiss, our fingers intertwined.
"I love you." She whispers.
"I love you, Angel."
From then on, I knew that nothing would ever be as perfect as this moment right now. Now to tell everyone the news.
