"Niall, you're going to be late for school!"

I responded with a muffled groan before stumbling out of bed to my bathroom. As I was washing face with the cold running water from the faucet, I mentally prayed that nothing would go wrong today.

It was my last year in high school, and I couldn't wait to get out of there, I wanted to see places outside of Ireland. I had a big plan for the future.

Until the "accident"

I cringed at the thought of the memory, I dreaded that time and I never wanted to go back ever again.

I picked up my backpack that laid on my floor and headed downstairs, I got excited as I smelled the aroma of burnt bacon, scrambled eggs with cheese, and toast with strawberry jam filled my nose with its intoxicating scent making my stomach growl.

I turned the corner to the kitchen, immediately spotting the delicious food on the countertop.

I pulled out a glass and a jug of chocolate milk from the fridge. Secretly taking a big gulp from the jug then pouring into the vacant glass.

"Niall James Horan!" I jumped surprised almost spilling the jug of milk.

"Nana, you gotta stop doing that!" I held my hand against my chest as my breathing started to decrease.

"Not until you learn not to drink from the carton." I turned to look at the nice old lady to see that she was still in her nightgown. My parents died a couple of years ago before I had to move in with Nana here in West Meath, now she's the only legal guardian and family. She's a real sweet lady, I treat her as like I would with my mother, she even looks like my mother.

She smiles at me, because I know she couldn't be mad at me forever.

"Hurry and eat up. Your breakfast is getting cold." I jumped back onto the stool with the glass in my hand.

"Nana, are you sure you will be okay without me around the house?"

She gave me a sympathetic smile "Of course I will alright, I am more worried about you. You're a senior now. Have you even figured out where to go yet?"

"I was thinking I could stay around with you for a while, honestly." I shoved the eggs and bacon into my mouth with my fork along with a quick sip of chocolate milk.

"Niall, it would be great to have you stay, but what about you going to college and making a living for yourself?"

"Nana, I am perfectly fine. I can even help with the business." I took one last bite of my toast before standing up and giving her a kiss on her wrinkled cheek. "Don't worry about it."

I checked the time on the wall, "Gotta dash!" I yelled as I burst through the front door, across the lawn, and then onto the sidewalk.

The school was close by so I just walk there, even though I had a car, but I hardly use it. You're probably wondering why I didn't leave town when I had the opportunity. Truth is, I can't see any other place to be but here, yeah I wanted to go places but I can't just leave and forget everything. My friends. Even Nana. She is the only family left. I thought it would be better to stay with her and work at the company with her.

Nana works at this editing company some where in the city, but does all her work at home. I could just graduate and get a job there, it will get me good money and I can even help her with expenses.

"Niall!" I glanced back to see a black Chevy pick-up truck parking right next to me. A boy wearing a plaid shirt and a warm smile I could recognize easily.

"Liam, Hey!" I opened the car door and climbed into the passengers seat, " How's everything mate?" I asked.

"Nothing good, I will tell you that. Niall, are you sure you're not gonna join the basketball team this year?" he said as he started down the road again.
