My mind couldn't process it, my chest felt like I've been stabbed. And then this place, this soul sucking building that I've dreaded my whole life. Now I'm here, sitting the hospital room where Luce lays on bed, surrounded by machines and tubes. Bruises covered her face and arms, while a tube was down her throat. She lays there peacefully, as if she's not in pain. I reach over and grasp her hand holding it tightly, my eyes growing weary with lack of sleep, bloodshot and puffy from crying so hard after I got the phone call.
"Mr. Horan?" The doctor walks in, clip board in hand, "I'm Dr. Richards." We shake each others hands.
"How is she?"
"She's doing well, few broken ribs, nothing else. But." he says.
"But?"
"During impact, she slammed her head, causing a minor concussion or trauma in the brain. Meaning she might be out for a while."
"You mean like a coma? How long?"
"Well, you can never really tell the exact date, but depending on how hard the impact on her head was we can determine the expected time. Because it's minor, possibly a few weeks."
"When you called me, you said she was in a car accident?"
"Yes that's right?"
"Can you tell me the driver?"
"The young man was driving intensely intoxicated with no license on him, but they did catch his name. Mr. Dylan Ross."
********
I stayed beside Luce all of Christmas day, waiting or those blue eyes to appear, but no, not yet.
"Niall?" Nana rushes over to my side, "Oh my baby, everything's okay." She pulls me into a hug, squeezing me close.
"No it's not Nana." I mumble into her shoulder.
"Darling, you heard what the doctor said, she'll wake up eventually." She pulls away, cupping my face in her hands.
"But Nana, she wouldn't even be here in this condition if it weren't for me."
"Niall, this isn't your fault."
"It is! I yelled at her and she walked out, we'd be at the cabin right now watching a cheesy Christmas movie cuddling on the couch and just talking, but no I had to screw everything up like I always do!"
Silence filled the room for a few seconds, "Niall, we have to leave soon."
"What?"
"You start school again in a few days."
"No Nana, I can't leave her here."
"I talked to the doctor, and he agreed to transfer her closet to where we are."
"Oh..."
"But, you wont be allowed to see her for a few days, I'll be in the hall when you're ready to leave." She walks out the door, not bothering to let me speak.
I turn my attention back to Luce. "Hey there Angel, seems like I wont be able to see you for a few days. I also want to say that I'm sorry, that I doubted you and said those things to you, I never meant any of it. You're the single most beautiful, most talented and most important being that ever happened to me." I kiss her hand stroking the smooth skin with my fingers. "Even if you don't wake up for a hundred years, I'll wait for you and I'll be the first one you see. I love you so much Luce, my Angel." I kiss her forehead still holding her hand. "Merry Christmas Luce, I'll see you again soon."
