The night outside my flat was some kind of an invitation for Louis to bother me further. He doesn't stop. Elizabeth's right. Louis Tomlinson must always get what he wants. But whenever he's near, I look the other way and completely rid of his existence. The pain in my heart has grown heavier as the days drag on. Andrew's seventh month passed in an excrutiatingly slow twenty four hours. I spent the day in the record store listening to The Beatles and wondering why my life couldn't be simpler. Maybe I'm just different than other girls.
"So, what's a good band that I should get into?"
"Go away, Louis."
"Oh, come on. Don't be like that, Addie."
"Don't call me that," I quickly retort. "That's not my name. Get it right. And get out of the store while you're at it."
He leans against the counter. "Listen, sweetheart, you don't exactly have a choice here anymore. I tried to play easy but you're not having it. You will be my girl no matter what. So be ready for a date tonight. I know where you live so don't even try hiding. I'll find you wherever you go."
I roll my eyes. "Shut up and get out. I'm trying to work."
He throws his arms in the air in surrender and slowly exits. I exhale in relief. Is he serious about this date? He better not be. I am most definitely not ready to begin dating other people. He can't force me to date him. London may fear him but I do not. What is there to fear? What is the worst that can happen? He kills me? What's so horrible about that?
"Was that Louis Tomlinson?" my coworker, Miles, asks.
"Ugh, yeah," I groan. "He won't leave me alone. You know, a few weeks ago he came in late to the store because he was stabbed? I call him an ambulance and he wants to marry me. How ridiculous is that?"
"Not so," Miles inquires. "You know, Louis just went through a bad breakup with a girl named Eleanor Calder. She was his previous girlfriend. She really ripped him apart. But Louis's a tough guy so he bounced back quick. Eleanor was tired of his controlling and dangerous ways so she left him without a trace and no goodbye. Just like that, she left and he doesn't have a clue on where he can find her. Eleanor's the closest he's ever come to love."
"I don't blame her," I snort. "On leaving Louis. He isn't my exact vision of a good boyfriend. Or just a good person in general."
Miles laughs. "You're right," he agrees. "I guess karma came back to bite him in the arse. No good deed goes unpunished. And bringing Eleanor in his life and then taking her right back out was just what he needed. Everything has a consequence."
"You're preaching to the choir here, Miles," I sigh. "I'm aware of all of this. Louis, on the other hand, is not. So maybe we should try to teach him a lesson?"
He smirks. "What would that lesson be, Miss McKay?"
"We need to teach Louis that he can't always get what he wants. He's a grown man, he should know."
"So what's the plan?"
"Would you mind being my pretend boyfriend for the next couple of days or possibly weeks?" I ask hopefully.
He grins. "It'd be an honor." He playfully takes my hand in his. "Come here, girlfriend."
I chuckle and lean closer. "Right away, boyfriend." I press my forehead against his to look into his brown eyes. "Miles, I think we have a great thing brewing here. We are going to crush Louis Tomlinson."
And for the next few days, we make our fake relationship obvious. I tell Elizabeth that I have a new boyfriend. I tell our coworkers, our boss, my family. I tell pretty much everyone that I can find. Louis's still been watching me. His car is still parked outside my flat most of the time. Whenever Miles is around and I have the sense that Louis's watching me, I feel safer. I don't feel as alone. And I take great initiative to break Louis. I cuddle into Miles's arm, hold his hand, kiss his cheek. I do anything a good girlfriend would do to their equally great boyfriend.
