Finally it was Saturday, a day where I had to do nothing, but sit in my couch and watch cartoons with my brother. Together we sat on my bed in the master bedroom absorbed into the spongebob re-run.
"Bear?"
Braxton's voice broke the silence.
"Yes Brax."
I replied not taking my eyes from the screen in front of me.
"Can BreBre be my mommy."
If I had snapped my head toward my little brother any faster I would've broken my neck. Did he just say what I think he just said?
I was now looking at him and I turned the volume down on the tv. He too had his soft eyes on me. They held so much innocence in them, what was I going to say?"Why do you ask that bud?"
"Well Mommy isn't around no more and I want a mommy."
All I could do is nod before stepping out of the bed. I knew what I had to do and I had to let go of all the anger built up inside and stop denying my little brother the only luxury I couldn't give to him.
"Bud you stay here ok, I'll be back in few."
He replied with an okay before turning his attention back to the TV. With him somewhat occupied I went out of room into the hallway dialing a number I had blocked for sometime now. With just a ring they picked up and her voice came through.
"Glenwood Condos on 5th Avenue. Be here in an hour or don't bother."
Quickly hanging up I took a big breath and began to pace. Did I just do the right thing or was I making a mistake? Usually when something didn't feel right in would feel something in the pit of my stomach, but I don't feel anything, but nerves. This is all for Braxton, remember. This is all for Braxton.
I paced for about a good ten minutes before in finally decided to go back into the room. When I walked I Braxton sat in the same spot with his attention on the screen, he probably didn't even notice how long I was absent for. So getting back into the bed with him I took him into my arms and together we waited. Maybe things won't be too bad.>>breanna
"Breanna?"
I took my attention away from my phone screen and placed on my mother who stood in my doorway. She still wore her scrubs, meaning she had just come from work. Which was surprising, wasn't she supposed to be on the graveyard shift?
"I um wanted to-"
She stopped mid sentence and shifted a little. Whenever my mom was this uncomfortable, she would either say something really awkward or something bad that she didn't mean to say. I watched as she let out a heavy breath and shifted again.
"Look I just want to let you know that I'm sorry. I truly am sorry. I was selfish and completely forgot that I had a little girl to raise. Now you're all grown up and you no longer need me."
"It's okay-"
"No Breanna it's not. I choose not to be your mom and that was one of the biggest mistakes I've ever made."
Tears were threatening to fall and I knew sooner or later my mother would break down in front of me. Serving her like this had me questioning my kindness, because I thought I wouldn't feel a single thing for her, but no in my heart my mother held a very special place.
"I thought I was the one who got hit the hardest when your Dad passed, but you suffered way more than I. Because you lost both your parents."
