One thing I've noticed is that last year something bothered me a ton, but this year it didn't brother me at all. This thing was not having my mother around. Ever since my dad passed away my mom decided to put her work before me and avoided me at any cost. Now with my new schedule I was giving her exactly what she wanted, she'd be home while I was at school and when I got back home she'd be at working the graveyard shift, but tonight when I returned home from practice she was in the kitchen. Maybe she didn't have to work today or something, but who cares she probably didn't even want to interact with me.

'What are you doing tonight?'

Right as I sent Brooke the text I looked up meeting eyes with my mom. She gave me a small awkward smile coming out of the kitchen.

"Thought you'd be home when I came in, but I forgot your doing sports now."

Her voice was shaky as if she were nervous to say something wrong. I for one just nodded my head, dismissing myself to my room. I didn't want to sit through a whole dinner with my mom trying to make conversation, knowing she didn't want me there.

'Nothing. What's up?'

"Chase you answer your farther when he speaks to you."

My mother was glaring my way from her seat across the table as I ignored the idiot beside her trying to speak to me.
We all were having nice quite dinner, but my so called farther wanted to be different today and try to speak to me. He wasn't already drunk off his ass and blabbering about so it intrigued me that he actual thought I liked him enough to speak to him. He even tired talking to my little brother, Braxton, who he knows nothing about.

"If I were you I'd listen to your mother. If you know what's good for you."

I continued to chew on the under cooked meat aggressively to hold my tongue.

"Let me try this again. What's this I hear about you dating a nigger?"

You see the first time he asked the question I blocked him out, but now I had my ears wide open. This time when he asked his question my hand cocked back so quickly and collided with his face.
Watching as he flew back out of his seat, my mother rushed to his aid screaming unladylike words.

"Chase Bradford! What's gotten into you!? It this because you are actually dating a nigger!"

I never imagined such disgusting words  come from my mother's mouth, especially after I told her how I felt about Breanna. What had she become? With my farther around she's become a whole new, evil person just as he was.
My mother's eyes connected with mine and I could see in her eyes she was sorry, but now she'd finally shown how much he meant to her compared to my brother and I.

"Chase I-"

"Save it. I'm done."

I gave my mother one more look before turning my back and walking up to my bedroom.
Entering my room I grabbed a bag and started packing my things in a very aggressive manner.

"Bear?"

I knew the voice behind me belonged to my little brother, but I couldn't face him so I continued my packing. He'd been calling me 'Bear' ever since watching the movie brother bear.

"Where you going? Can I come?"

His questions somehow surprised me. Mainly because when he watched me pack he'd know I was going on some sports trip.
I turned my back finally looking at my brother seeing he stood in my doorway with his teddy bear in hand and his suitcase in the other hand. This told me he knew big brother wasn't coming back from this trip.
