Rain pelted the ground for hours- which was unusual for the usually hot and sunny LA. The weather station had predicted prolonged thunderstorms and rainfall. In a city that survived on having dry, hot days; it ruined most people's plans-especially those who had their hearts set on going to prom.
Maria sat with her hand on her jaw; sulking while she stared out at the darkened skies. It was barely four in the evening and the street lights were already on full blast.
"This is a fucking disaster." She mumbled.
"Look at the bright side." Janessa commented, "at least you won't have to see Terry with his new girlfriend." She shrugged while mixing two cups of hot chocolate.
"Aren't you supposed to be my best friend?" She sneered.
"I am your best friend."
"Then you're supposed to help me show up my ex!" She stood. "This was my chance to show that asshole that I'm doing great; that I'm not bothered by his new skank." She pointed to nothing in particular.
"By showing off your new boy toy?"
"My new college boy toy." She grinned. "I want him to eat his heart out."
"So much for you being over him." Janessa rolled her eyes.
"I totally am! I just want him to be miserable that's all."
Lightning flashed just then and the girls screamed as the thunder clapped and the power went out.
"Where's your dad?"
"He's still at work. Said he won't be home until the storm clears up."
"So I guess it's just us then." Maria said as they found flashlights and candles.
The two spent the next few hours talking and laughing about their exes when someone rang the doorbell. Janessa looked at Maria as if hoping she had the answer to who's at the door.
"Don't look at me."
"Who the hell could it be?" She stood with the intention to answer it.
"Don't answer it! What if it's a serial killer?"
"Out of all the houses in this neighbourhood, you think a serial killer is gonna stop here?"
"Well maybe because nobody else answered!" Maria whisper-yelled.
The doorbell rang again and Janessa rolled her eyes. Taking a knife from the kitchen, both of them tiptoed to the door where Janessa peeped through the window at the side. She saw a tall figure wearing a hoodie jacket and familiarity ran through her.
She hesitantly opened the door to feel the cold breeze make its way in from the rain.
"Reese, what are you doing here?"

"It's raining cats and dogs out there." Keith mentioned while he stared out the window of his office.
"It's ruining my plans." Kimmy complained. "I was supposed to have a spa day but with this torrential downpour, they cancelled my appointment."
Keith turned to look at his fiancé sitting on the couch by the door; flipping through more bridal magazines. When he got home yesterday, he had asked Kimmy if she knew Janessa and she immediately got angry and defensive.
She claimed she didn't know her but now she was acting strange. Stranger than normal, actually. It made him wonder what happened between those two.
"I made reservations for dinner tonight but with this rain I'll have to cancel that too." She continued to complain. "The wedding planner called me today saying we have to push the wedding back by a few weeks." She scowled. "Can you believe it?"
