the picture sits on the table beside his bed,
facing him so she's the
last person he sees before he
closes his eyes
and the first person he sees
when he opens them.
he sees her smile
and her mother's
and wonders if she still cries
from missing her.
because he always used to hold her,
and now who will
when they're miles apart?
he hasn't been able to sleep,
because it's been a while since they talked
and he can't ever seem to catch her.
he keeps telling himself she's busy
and that he'll hear from her soon.
but that doesn't stop the fear
or the worry
or the longing.
