I walk over to the dining room to get some food for breakfast. “Hey guys.” I say sitting down
Joan looks at me. “Hey. Now Katharine, um…Danny has asked to be coached separately for the interviews. You know this stuff kind of happens before the Games, I hope you don’t mind.”
What? Why? I’m desperate to ask Danny, because he and I agreed to hang out as much as we can before the Games, but I just nod. It's not the end of the world, maybe something came up. “Okay.” My stomach churns and I feel upset, and as if I’m going to cry, which happens often when I’m given bad news.
“So, Katharine, for the first four hours of the training, you’ll be with Mollie, I’ll be with Danny. Then we will have lunch and switch, so for the next four hours, I’ll be with you, and Mollie will be with Danny.” Joan says sipping her hot chocolate.
I nod and drink my hot chocolate as well. Danny then walks in and smiles at me when I’m almost done eating. I nod, but don’t return a smile.
“What the matter?” He asks looking at me once he sits down.
I shrug. “Oh, it’s nothing really, just the fact that you decided not to train with me for the interviews, even when we agreed to spend as much time as we can before the Games start.” I say and get up from my seat and off into my room.
I lay on my bed waiting for Mollie for about an hour and a half. There is then a knocking on my door and Mollie walks in. I sit up and she smiles.
“Hey, so let’s get started!” She says clapping her hands. She then brings in a few bins full of shoes and gloves and several other accessories, and I just stare at them in shock.
We spend about the whole four hours on how I should smile, wave and walk. The high heels I’m instructed to wear were terrible. I am about to fall on every step I take, and I wobble, about to trip. They are the color ruby red, and four inches tall. They seem to cause blisters on my feet because they soon begin to feel sore, and eventually fall asleep and tickle, which is very uncomfortable for me. Mollie helps me walk in them, till I finally trip and stumble face down onto my bed, and my legs on the wooden floor.
“Okay, heels won’t work on you.” Mollie says as she takes off the heels. “But they do look lovely on you.”
"You think?" I say and just roll my eyes, “so, what next?” God, it’s been like two hours of wearing about fifty pairs of heels and she just finally realized I can’t walk in them, wow. That’s pretty dumb.
Mollie looks up at me and smiles. “Well, that’s it. The four hours is up. Joan’s all yours after lunch.” She then grabs her things and left the room.
After lunch, I head back into my room and sit on my bed, waiting for Joan. I’m waiting for about two minutes until Joan comes in.
“Hey!” She says. “Now, my part of the training is to find your angle.”
“My angle,” I ask. I’m not so sure what it means, but I believe it’s how I will represent myself on stage.
“Yes. Your angle is how you will act out there during the interviews. How you’ll answer your questions. Your angle is the true you, the true Katharine Star.” Joan says and continues, “People out there want to know who you really are.” She winks at me. “So, I’ll pretend to be Chris, and ask the questions.” She reaches into her bag and grabs a few note cards which must have some questions on them.
