When we arrived, her mother was waiting outside. She seemed to be nervous, fiddling with her hands like Sloane does.
I parked, grabbed our things and walked with her towards her mother.
"One night." She whispered.
"Hi Mommie! How are you?" She spoke with an accent I didn't recognize.
"Aww Reese, she look pretty yuh know?" Her mother smiled at me.
Reese? I asked myself.
"Me good. How ya do baby?" Her mother spoke in that same accent to me.
"I'm good. And you?" I replied politely.
"Me good. Yah taking care of me baby? She getting big, yes?" Her mother examined Sloane, poking at her belly. I smiled, laughing a little.
"How ya do baby?" She asked Sloane.
"I'm good mommie. Where's Kale?" Her mother sucked her teeth.
"He a watching da tv with he fada." Her mother crossed her arms angrily.
"Oh! Oh gawd. What's ya name sweetie?" She asked me.
"Daniel." I replied simply.
"Ooh Daniel! I like dat name!" She took Sloane's hand in hers, happily.
"He cute and he sweet. You can call me Miss Tantie baby." She shook my hand and lead us in.
So far, so good. I said to myself.
"Who are you boy?" Sloane's father jumped up to approach me, bottle in hand. Maybe not.
"I'm Daniel sir, Sloane's boyfriend." I replied, keeping my composure. He looked me over once and said,
"Boyfriend eh? Sloane wha happen to school?" He seemed angry. Same accent though.
"I graduated dad." She replied quietly. He looked baffled and sat back down quietly. Just then, Kale stood up. He dapped me and said
"Hey man. I'm Kale, what's your name again?" No accent.
"Daniel."
He seemed to be only 20.
"You hungry?"
"Starving." He chuckled.
"Let me help you with those bags and we'll fix you something." He hugged Sloane as she kissed his cheek and helped me carry bags to her old room.
"I'm sorry about our dad man. He's an ass, I don't even know why he came here."
I sat on her bed quietly.
"He's alright, I guess." I said. Kale scoffed, scratching his head.
"Yeah, so how long you been dating my sister? And why are you here?" He straightened up, crossing his arms. I was a bit shocked but I answered.
"Two years, and we thought it was a good time to meet the parents." Kale chuckled.
"Why you knocked her up?" He asked laughing to himself.
I didn't reply, and his mouth was wide open.
"Wow." He said, leaving the room.
Just then we heard screaming from the living room.
"Sloane how could you?!" Her mother yelled. Kale ran into the living room, I followed behind swiftly to see what unfolded.
"You are a disgrace!! How could you! And you bring dis boy to my house!" Her father yelled.
"Dis is not your house anymore Charles!" Her mother hollered back.
Kale and I walked right in it.
"Ya bright boy. Real bright." Her father said to me angrily. I held her waist, she was shaking bad. Tears forming in her eyes.
"Leave him alone." She shot back. "You don't have to be here, no one asked you to be here." She said. He raised a hand at her, I quick punched him in the face. He fell over the couch, a little winded.
Kale laughed.
"Charles leave please!!" Miss Tantie pleaded.
He held his cheek, walking out the door.
Miss Tantie slammed the door behind him, locking it. Kale hugged his mother as I hugged Sloane.
"I'm sorry you had to see dat Daniel." She said lowly. "We hear the good news but Charles wasn't too happy."
"I understand, as long as we have your approval Miss Tantie." I said smiling weakly.
"You don't." She said sternly.
"I don't take kindly to you popping up in here with me daughter pregnant. I would prefer you come before dis mess. She has to be a doctor."
I guess she didn't tell them she's a film major.
"I apologize ma'am." I said looking at Sloane. She was quiet.
"No, I'm sorry. Ya gon marry her?" She asked.
"Mommie." Kale said trying to step in.
"Hush boy."
"Yes ma'am I will. I love her very much." I said.
"Good, ya betta."
"Sloane, when ya bring dat degree? Me finna hang it on me wall. Ya see all Kale tings up here?" She pointed to the wall, Sloane didn't look.
"Sloane!" She picked up her head slowly, to see.
"I guess it'll just be a photo of me grandbaby up der." She said gritting her teeth.
Her mother made herself a plate of food and went to her room.
"I did not come to America for you to be like this." Kale said in his mother's accent. He kissed Sloane's forehead as she laughed lightly.
"Thanks mommie." She joked.
"Ya good baby." He spoke again laughing.
"Alright man, ya wan some curry goat or rabbit?" Kale asked me.
We hung out with Kale that night. I was honestly blown away by their upbringing. Kale and Sloane went back and forth with crazy stories from their past, each one worse then the last and they were still smiling.
Being pregnant was practically icing on the cake for S.
