The Setup

The party was jumping when we walked in. Not even gonna lie, I'm pretty sure this was a fire that I started, I say in my head. I honestly talk to myself in my head too much. I'm beginning to show movement when I do it, like that girl Jenna from Awkward. "This party is awesome!" Andrea's voice knocked me out of my thoughts. "Eee! Check out the cute boys!" she squealed, pointing quickly at some guys and then blowing it off, smiling at me wildly for confirmation. "Hey ladies! Looking good might I say." Roger said, pulling us into a group hug. He then motioned himself towards Andrea, taking her chin to position her focus on him. "Woo-whee! Andrea, you got a minute for me?" She quickly smacked his hand away, only to intertwine it with her own and take him away. "Seeya in a minute Sloane!" She quick waved at me and stepped out with Roger. Great now I'm by myself! Monologuing again! I say screaming at myself, again in my head. I know Andrea and she's not coming back in a minute. And since I know myself, I know I'm awkward and will only make things weird for myself here. I just rolled my eyes and decided to pretend to be busy. I walked over to the food. I just grabbed a drink and stood to the sidelines of the dance floor, checking out some people move. I noticed one guy in particular emerge from the dance floor to make my acquaintance. "And how are you tonight beautiful?" This guy decided to waltz up and smooth talk me. Bad idea. Again, I know me and I know I get dismissive too fast and awkward if a guy stays too long. "I'm fine." I say in short, hoping he'll catch a hint. "You enjoying the party?" he asked, making conversation I see, I speak once again, in my head. "I, uh, actually just got here with a friend, Andrea. She left me for her boy toy Roger." I say looking down into my cup. "Oh I know him. That's my boy! He was talking about some girl named Andrea. That must make you my date tonight." He winked. "Sloane right?" I smiled and melted like butter.

Pull yourself together!

But he's so cute!

Get it together! Hard to get! Play hard to get!

My inner monologue was no help. "Yeah that's me. Diggy? or is it Daniel? See I googled you and your whole name popped.." my voice trailed to a new path that my mouth wouldn't get off of. "I'm sorry that came off really creepy! I mean since your famous and all! Do you google yourself? That sounds dirty!" I quickly shoved some chips in my mouth and was ready to plan the escape route, but he quickly pulled me back, saying "It's not creepy at all. You gotta know what you're in for right?" I nod and smile, still trying to digest, verbally and physically. Stupid chips. He laughed a little and said "And, my name is Daniel. But you can call me Diggy if you want to." He winked again. He better stop before I quit breathing. "Quit winking at me." I laughed a little as I said it, not truly realizing what I said. "Why?" he said winking one eye and then the other continually. I turned away laughing and said "Because air is something I need for survival. Keep winking like that and you'll kill me! You don't wanna homicide on your hands do ya?" Shit, my stupid sarcasm layers again. I'm pretty smooth right now though. "Cute. I guess I'll stop. Don't wanna hurt a pretty lady like you." He winked one last time. I roll my eyes and lightly hit him.

"You're a smooth talker."

"Sue me."

"I should. I'm feeling a little faint after all that. Let's say attempt to homicide Mr. Simmons?" I say in a real fancy voice.

"Well Ms.-"

"Sawyers."

"Interesting. Well Ms. Sawyers, I'd say see you in court. But for tonight, would you care to dance with me?" Whoa what?! I don't dance! "Uhh. Sure." Why?! F. M. Fucking L. He took my hand and we head to the floor. He was a pretty good dancer, he did a couple of cute moves, a little side shuffle, the works. I just awkwardly shuffled side to side, head bobbing to the music. "What's up with you? All talk no bite?" He said, dancing a little closer to me.

"I don't dance."

"What?" he yelled. I leaned in to his ear.

"I don't dance."

"What is this high school musical?" he joked, a little too heartily. My sarcasm could take that.

"Did you see that? I was the character behind Corbin Bleu in the sparkly baseball uniform."

"Sparkles? You just get more and more interesting Sawyers." He pulled my waist closer to his, he looked at me for an okay and I nodded. "Move like this." He moved my hips side to side with the beat. He even showed me a couple of moves! It was nice. At that moment, he pushed my chin up and started to say something but stopped. He just looked at me, staring into my eyes like the movies. "Sloane! Get Roger away from me!" I heard Andrea yell. She had made her way to me and Daniel, ruining such a blissful moment. "Come on baby!" Roger pouted, he tugged at her waist a little. "Aww look at you guys." she said making kissy faces at us. Daniel put his head down, smiling. "Yes! Guys this is my lovely date Daniel! It's been a half hour and I think I'm in love!" I say taking his hand and squeezing it in  mine, talking as if we were a happily married 'too in love' kind of couple in a matter of minutes. He chuckled. "I was just showing her some moves. Girl can't dance." I playfully hit him again. "You gonna charge her for that?" Roger said. "Roger!" Andrea scolded him. "She can pay for it!" He shot back. "He's right. How much is that gonna cost me?" I say, facing Daniel. "Just your time. How's a date sound?" he said smoothly. I could tell I was cheesing a little too hard for that one.

"Really?" I question. "Yep. We still have to talk over that homicide case, Sawyers." He winked again. Jesus please take the fucking wheel. "Uh, yeah. Yeah we do."

After the party, I pulled him aside saying "Hey, I'm gonna need that number." He brushed off his shoulder and said "Well I guess it's the least I could do after putting you through all that trouble." I bite back a wide smile by licking my teeth. Weird. "Yeah sure." I hand him my phone and he does the same, letting each other place ourselves as a new contact. I notice the kissy face emojis he's putting by his name. "Cute emojis." This time I wink. I'm really liking this guy. Thank god for my beautiful sense of humor. "Leave 'em. You know you would've secretly put them there anyway and never let me see. I'm just doing you a favor."

"Whatever, give me my phone." I say, snatching my phone out of his hand only to have him catch it. Big hands. "I had a great time with you tonight Sawyers. So don't forget to text me, I might tear up if you don't." Again, I get caught in the Joker's smile with this kid. Smiles so wide I could fit a bus in there! Ugh. "Will do Simmons." He let go and we went our separate ways.
