It was a long drive to Portland, Oregon, but we got there soon enough. The first thing we did was stop at a diner called the Original Hotcake House. As one of the only things we could find so late that all of us agreed on, it was amazing. I'm sure Dean would be fine coming here night and day until the dreadful day he'd have to leave it. With breakfasts galore, amazingly delicious steak, and their famous one third pounder burgers, I'm sure Dean found the best heaven on earth in the northwestern United States.
"Not to spoil the time with you two and your late night munchies, we should probably go find a motel to stay at for the night." Sam suggests. Dean nods in agreement and goes to get some boxes to take our leftovers that were surprisingly, well... leftover.
We arrived at a Motel 6 that was surprisingly well kept. At least compared to the ones we'd stayed in previously. Neither of us were tired yet, despite Dean's constant parental lecturing about how I should go to sleep.
"I'm not tired, Dad. If I was, I'd be asleep in the car long before now." I explained. "Now let me help." I sat on one of the chairs around a tiny table.
"You can help in the morning so go to sleep." Dean ordered. "We can handle research until we crash too." I groan in response, laying on the bed. Not being tired, I pulled out my phone and checked the time. I couldn't even talk to Ariana. It was only three in the morning back in Minnesota. It was one o'clock in Portland. I scrolled through some social media and soon was falling asleep.
I wasn't out for very long before I woke up from a nightmare. One of the worst ones I'd had for a while. Dean was sitting on the edge of the bed with a hand on my shoulder. I look around, frantically searching for leviathan, demons, or angels that had been after me in my dream. In my useless search, I found Sam sitting up in his bed, worried just as much as Dean. Had I woken them up?
"Ava, you're okay," Dean's words snapped me back to reality. I hadn't realised either of them were speaking, trying to calm me down. As I woke up more and more I realised I was covered in sweat, but freezing cold. My entire body was shaking, but I couldn't tell if it was fear or the possible temperature of my body. My breathing was the first thing I calmed down enough so I could answer their question. What had I been dreaming about?
"I- I don't remember exactly. I just remember running from someone." Remembering what had happened in my dream just before I woke up, I added to what I had said. "Or something," I mumbled out.
"You're okay though, Ava. Nothing and no one is going to hurt you with us here, okay? We'll protect you." Sam said comfortingly.
"Yeah," Dean said. He seemed awkward, like he wasn't exactly sure how to say something to calm me down. "What he said." Not that I needed him too. I could help myself calm back down.
"Do you want to talk about what happened?" Sam asked. I shrugged. I wasn't sure I remembered enough to give the full scoop.
"I was running through some alley way. It was really dark outside. There was a dead end so I had to stop running. I woke up before I saw who attacked me." I explained, my voice tired and quiet. I let out a yawn and ran a stressed hand through my tangled hair.
"It wasn't real, though." Dean said. "Everything right now is real. We're here, whatever you were dreaming about isn't."
"You're safe," Sam added again. I nodded, even though I doubted it in just the smallest bit. I was safe right now, but would I be able to stay safe forever? Probably not.
"Do you want to go back to sleep? It's only-" Dean squinted at the time on the microwave. "It's only three o'clock right now."
I shook my head. I didn't want to go back to sleep yet, if at all for the next twenty-four hours. Besides, I could text Ariana soon, before she went off to school for the day. She'd help take my mind off of my dream. I'm not saying Dean and Sam haven't, but Ariana was more of a fit. She wasn't my dad or my uncle, she was my best friend.
