"Not a demon or a chomper," Meg analyzes. "What the hell are you?" Now that I get a good look at his face, the guy we'd been chasing doesn't seem like a guy at all. What I mean is he looks like he's my age and he looks scared out of his damn mind.
Panting just about as bad as I am, he seems to be able to stutter out, "I'm a... K-Kevin Tran. I'm in advanced placement. P-p-p-p-please don't kill me.-----
"I'm not going to kill you." Sam says reassuringly, leaning forward to grab the duffel bag. Not letting go, Sam ends up lifting Kevin to his feet.
"I'm sorry." Kevin says, still sounding scared out of his mind. Sam continues to try and yank the duffel bag away to no avail. "I-I'm sorry," Kevin claims again, still not letting go.
"Just let it go, dude." I say like it's simple, which--really--it is.
"I-I don't-- I don't know why, but I can't let go of this." Kevin shakes his head, obviously not understanding why he couldn't let go. Seemed like a case good enough for us to look into. We took him back to Cas' room and on the way, though it was a short trip, I convinced Meg and Sam to let me talk to him for the duration.
"So..." I say, kicking a rock that was placed perfectly in my path. "Advanced placement, huh?" He looked at me in complete surprise, his face no longer holding as much fear as it was before.
"Wh-what?" His eyebrows furrowed together out of confusion. I'm sure he expecting something completely different.
"I was just-- I was in advanced placement when I went to school. And you said that you're in advanced placement. I thought maybe we could bond over it. I don't know how long you're gonna be here, but, I mean, I get super lonely without having someone my age around and--"
"Yeah," he said, stopping me from rambling further. "I-- Uh, what classes were you taking?"
I nod smile slightly at him being much calmer now, able to make a much more comprehensible sentence. "I was taking advanced math and science classes. I was also taking an IB English class." Thinking about my old life again, I smile sadly before looking at Kevin again. "What're you taking?"
"Well, uh, everything." He said with a forced laugh. Getting closer to Cas' room, I gave him somewhat of a sad smile before watching my feet as we finished the journey.
Sam told Kevin to sit on the bed when we got to the room and he does as he's told. I lean up against the desk near the door as Meg stalks around the other side of Kevin. "You really stepped in it, kid." She says. Laughing, she adds a very non-sympathetic, "Oh, man."
"All I know is, this is--" he pauses before looking up to Sam and glancing over to me, nodding as he continues explaining. "It's for me. I'm supposed to keep it."
"Good luck," Meg says, giving Sam and I a look.
"But you don't know what it is?" Sam questions curiously. Kevin answers by just shaking his head. That gets us nowhere. "Open it." Sam instructs after a moment. Slowly, Kevin moves his hands from their death grip on the duffel bag and unzip it. Just slowly and cautious, he takes out two of the broken pieces of the Chicken Scratch Rock and puts them next to each other where they fit perfectly. My staring eyes widen in amazement as the two pieces seem to come back together without a trace of ever being broken at all. Just as curious as the rest of us, Kevin looks back to us as if we had an explanation. I, for one, didn't and it didn't seem like Meg or Sam had one either. He reattached the other piece and started to ask questions.
"What is this? What just happened? What did I--? How did I just--?" I noticed that he was on the verge of breaking into an extreme panic again, but I wasn't sure what to do. Now I knew what Dean and Sam must feel every time I wake them up with my nightmares.
