Neither Dean nor Sam looked nervous. They were holding their composure a hell of a lot better than I was. I stared at Harper, eyes wide, mouth open slightly in shock. I thought she was my age!
"You're an FBI agent?" I questioned.
Harper hesitated before nodding. "I am,"
"Really?" Dean raised a skeptical eyebrow at her. "Mind if I take a look?" He held out his hand for her badge. She handed it over for him and Sam to look over. I wasn't sure why or what they were looking for. When Sam shook his head and scoffed, I was sure they found what they were looking for.
"You're really FBI?" Sam asks. I look at Harper expecting a somewhat quick answer like before, but it doesn't come.
Dean leans forward onto the table, looking Harper straight in the eye. "Having forged a lot of crap in my day," he whispers to for only the four of us to be able to hear. "I gotta say, yours was almost believable. Keyword: almost."
"Er- I- let me explain," She fumbles over her words nervously.
"Hunter?" Sam asks, but he seems to already know the answer.
"Mind if I sit so I can explain myself?" I motion for Harper to sit next to me and she does.
"Can I just ask this-is your name really Harper?" I ask before she really has a chance to tell her life story.
"Yeah, I didn't lie about that." I breathed a sigh of relief at her words. "It's hard enough to lie about who I am in society. I don't think I'm organized enough to start lying about my name."
"So, Harper, what's your story?" Dean's tone held no kind of emotion to tell what his intention was. I just hoped he wasn't gonna go berserk or something.
She went on to explain how she was just barely more experienced at hunting than rookies. Two years ago one of her friends she'd been living with had been killed and the cops wrote it off as an animal attack. She said, "I knew better than to listen to those naive assholes. So I took matters into my own hands." Harper looked for a long time, trying to find what killed her best friend. She found a couple of vampires out in the woods just a few town over. At that time they were being killed by some more experienced hunters. Having no where to go, she stayed with the hunters she'd befriended. "They taught me most of what I know now. The rest I've been able to pick up on my own or with the help of some others I've met along the way." Harper nods, finishing her story.
"You're doing this on your own, then?" Sam asked.
"I'm twenty years old, dude. I can take care of myself." I laughed at her confidence, appreciating how fast it came about after meeting my dad and uncle.
Sam raised his hands in defense. "I wasn't saying you couldn't."
"I'm assuming you're here after what's been killing around here." Dean says, more laid back now. Of course, he's always slightly on edge because of his past, and probably me, too. Harper nods, answering his question. "What do you have on it so far?"
"Probably about as much as you, maybe less." She goes on to explain how she was passing through and heard about the death of the teenagers on the radio, deciding to stop and take a look. And that's what she's been doing.
"I say we combine our knowledge." I say finally. "It might make this move faster so nobody else has to die."
"You have a point." Harper agrees with a nod. She looks between Dean and Sam in question. "You guys cool with that?" They both agreed and we all talked about what we knew for the rest of the hour.
By the time we'd connected all of our separate info, we'd come to an unsure conclusion that this had to be some sort of ghosts since there was no other creature any of us could think of that it might be. The question was, if it's a spirit, is it angry?
