                                                                     Chapter 4

Kennet felt something cold and wet on her head.  She opened her eyes and saw she was in her parents room.  Kendra was sitting on the bed next to her pressing a cold washcloth to her head.  Keith sat on her other side and Jade and Kyle stood behind him.

     "Wha-what happened?" she asked.

"We were going into our room to get Jade's stuff.  When you opened the door you screamed and fainted." Keith explained.

"Why did I scream and faint?"

"I don't know why you fainted but your room was trashed and there were five giant spiders crawling around on the floor.  I squished them and called housekeeping then I carried you to your parents' room."

     "Spiders!" Kennet started shaking.

"She's had a deathly fear of spiders ever since she was little, although I don't...." Kendra started to explain then apparently realized something and abruptly stopped.

"Kendra, do you know why her room was trashed and why she's afraid of spiders?" Keith asked.  "I mean I totally understand the fear of spiders.  Those things give me the creeps." He shuddered.  Kendra gave a squeal and her eyes widened.

"Maybe, maybe not." She said nervously.  "I mean, why would I know anything about that."

"Kendra!" Kendra turned toward Steve as he walked into the room.  "Tell them.  They deserve to know."

"Gather 'round, children." Jade and Kyle sat on the bed while Kendra dragged over a chair.  "You all are adopted." Jade heaved a sigh and Kyle almost stopped breathing.  Kennet just sat and stared at the sheets while Keith listened intently.

"I knew your parents, Keith and Kyle, when they moved I lost some of my best friends.  Thankfully Jade's parents stayed.  We made sure you two grew up to be the best of friends and I see it worked.  When we first adopted you we thought it was so cute that you two both had gems in your necklaces when none of the other babies did.  When we took you home you were fine.  When you were sleeping at night a wolf spider climbed into your bed and you screamed worse than a normal baby would.  That was when we knew something was wrong.  We thought it was just a phase and you would grow out of it but we were wrong.  You reacted like that even if it was the tiniest of spiders.  I went to the mall with Cassie one day and found out that Jade reacted look that too with spiders.  I also noticed that everyone I met, no one had a gem in the center of their necklace.  Cassie and I got together again and I shared my findings.  We decided to go to the library and research it.  I found a book about necklaces that had a section about gem necklaces.

"Long ago, there used to be a warrior race.  Only the members of the warrior race had gems in their necklaces.  The warriors were created with the purpose of destroying the spider king.  His minions were spiders, still at actually.  He wanted to take over Illaria and turn everyone into spiders.  His followers are known as Spidats and they are repulsive.  The warrior princess was the ruler of the warriors.  The spider king killed her but not before she gave birth to fraternal twins.  As she lay dying, she used the last of her gift to freeze the twins in time.  In 500 years, they woke up and appeared before someone that would help them.  The spider king killed off the warriors but he never found the twins for the princess had hid them well.  They are the last two survivors of the warrior race, well and their soulmates of course.  It is said that the oldest looks like the princess while the younger one looks like their father.  Their was a portrait of the princess in the book.  Kennet, if you looked at it, it would be almost like looking in the mirror.  Jade you have the face of the father.  You four are the last of the warrior race.  You must train so you can destroy the spider king." when Kendra finished, it was so silent you could here a pin drop.

"If there are no survivors left, then how are we supposed to learn the way of the warrior?"  Keith asked.

"In the first days of the war, a spidat joined the warrior side.  She learned the way of the warrior, as you put it.  Spidats are not immortal but there was a sorcerer who gave her the task of protecting and training the royal twins and she had to be able to live this long so she has not aged in 500 years." Kendra explained.

"How did they find us?" Jade asked.

"Spidats and spiders are drawn to the power of the warrior.  The power got stronger when you met your soulmates.  Your soulmates, though, will make you weaker in battle so long as you are not bonded."

"How would they make us weaker?" Kennet finally found her voice.

"As long as you are not bonded you would constantly worry about the other in battle wondering if they are okay."

" You keep saying as long as we aren't bonded.  You don't mean..." Kyle said.

"Yes, I do.  We must perform the bonding ceremony between the unbonded soulmates in this room.  We must go back home and make preparations for each ceremony.  I expect you want separate ceremonies."

"Actually, Jade and I have been preparing our perfect double ceremony since we were kids.  We just put the finishing touches on it last week and locked away the plan in my safe."

"Well, you kids go pack your stuff back up and come back here." Steve said.

Kennet just sat there thinking about her clothes and in a half an hour her packed suitcases had come floating down the hall.  The other three were still getting there stuff together.

"Mom, why do we react the way we do to spiders?" Kennet asked her mom.

Kendra continued packing as she explained, "The warriors were born knowing that spiders are enemies.  You knew you just didn't understand and you weren't old enough to protect yourself so you developed a fee for them."

Ten minutes later, they were all gathered in the center of the room with the luggage in the middle.  There was a bright flash and the room was empty.
