Chapter 13
Kennet ran through the forest. She could hear her pursuer getting closer. Suddenly, she was knocked to the ground. She looked into blood red eyes. She nearly fainted when she caught a whiff of the being's breath. It smelled of rotten skunk mixed with a maggot infested skunk. He smiled and she caught a glimpse of sharp, pointy, yellowed teeth. A tongue that resembled a snake's slithered out and licked a cut on her face. She shuddered in disgust. She saw blood lust flicker in its cold eyes. A black, wrinkled hand with skin that resembled the rest of its body, ran down her face. It lowered its head and she felt its lips on her neck. She felt teeth on the same spot the lips had been only moments ago.
Kennet woke up and screamed. She felt sweat on her chest. Then she realized that someone was laying on top of her. She felt lips on her neck and shoved away whoever was on top of her. She fell off the couch and hit her head on the coffee table. She heard worried voices and a face appeared over her.
"Kennet! Kennet, wake up, now!" Jade's voice sounded far away. That was the last thing she saw and heard before everything went black.
Keith heard the heavy porch door close and snuck into his bedroom doorway, making sure to stay out of sight. He saw Jade and Kennet lay down on the couches. He watched them until he heard a faint snore coming from both couches. Be tiptoed out of his bedroom and over to Kennet's couch. He sat down next to her and felt her shaking. He covered her body with his and kissed her right below her eye. He was confused when he felt her shudder. He ran his hand down her face comfortingly. He kissed her neck and heard her scream. He kissed her neck again and felt her shove him away. It was like slow motion when she fell and hit her head on the corner of the wooden coffee table. He was shoved, once again, out of the way as Jade leaned over her and shouted her name. He watched her eyes close and he hugged his knees to his chest. Silent tears fell down his cheeks.
Kennet woke up and felt a pounding in her head. She tried to sit up but that only made it worse. She was laying on a strange bed with wolf sheets. The walls were painted blue and a black dresser stood in the corner. Near the dresser hung a mirror with a smiley face drawn on it. The walls were decorated with numerous drawings. The door opened with a creek and Jade walked in.
"How are you doing?" Jade asked cautiously.
"I'm fine but I have a pounding headache. Why am I here? What happened?" Kennet asked.
Jade handed her a bottle of water and two small pills. She easily swallowed them and downed the water.
"You had a nightmare. Keith was with you and you freaked out when he kissed your neck. You fell off the couch and hit your head on the corner of the coffee table. Do you remember your nightmare?" Jade had concern written all over her face.
"Kind of. I was running through the woods and a spidat caught me. He pinned me on the ground and licked the blood off my face, so gross. Then he was going to bite my neck but I woke up." Kennet shuddered at the memory.
"That must be why you didn't like Keith kissing your neck." Jade said, thoughtful.
"Yeah, must be." Kennet snuggled under the blankets and rolled over. Jade just shrugged and left the room.
Kennet cried into the pillow. She couldn't remember how long she cried, but she eventually fell asleep, only to have the nightmare again. This time when it ran a hand down her face a spider crawled out of his skin and buried itself in her face. She woke up screaming and fell off the edge of the bed. She hit the desk and passed out before she hit the ground.
Jade was leaning over her, fanning her face with a book. Kennet sat up. She saw a small, orange spider with long skinny legs crawl over her foot. She took the book from Jade and smashed it. When she lifted the book up, the spider was squished on the black cover of the book. She made a face and threw the book across the room.
"Kennet, you need Keith. Without him to hold you, you will just keep having the nightmare. All this trauma isn't good for the baby." Jade said with concern.
"I know. I just don't want it to slip. Meg had to erase his memory once, I don't want her to have to do it twice." Kennet lied. That wasn't the reason. She didn't want anybody to know the real reason, the secret that Keith had told her, the secret that had drove her to the brink of crazy. She didn't want him to know how it had affected her and how it would affect their children.
Jade raised an eyebrow' but didn't say anything. Jade and Kennet had been best friends ever since they were little girls. Call it twinstict or whatever you want but Jade knew when Kennet was lying. Jade stood and left the room. Kennet hugged her knees to her chest and rocked back and forth, staring at the multiple squished spider that were on the walls. Jade came back in carrying a plate with pancakes and two glasses of orange juice. She sat the plate in front of Kennet and handed her one of the glasses. Kennet smiled and started eating. Jade joined her.
When there was nothing but a plate, a few crumbs, and two empty glasses, Jade took the dishes upstairs. She never came back down. Kennet found a small tablet in the top drawer of the dresser. She turned it on a found that it didn't have a password. She played it for a little while.
"Gah, you stupid bird! I didn't even touch the friggin' pipe!" Kennet yelled at it. She turned it off but was playing it again five minutes later.
An hour later, the battery died. She put it back in the drawer and took a nap.
When she woke up, she was in total darkness. She switched on the bedside lamp. She rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. She smelled meat cooking. Her stomach growled, reminding her that she hadn't eaten since breakfast. She threw off the covers and walked across the room to the door. She caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror and did a double take.
Her face had marks on the side from her pillow. Her hair was everywhere and her stomach had a slight bulge to it. She dug through the dresser until she found a loose t-shirt with dancing flamingos on it. She put it on over her tanktop. She opened the door and walked down the hallway. She climbed the blue carpeted steps and opened the door at the top to walk into the kitchen.
"Oh, look who decided to rejoin the world." Kyle smirked from his spot at the bar.
"Oh, honey, what happened to you?" Jade looked at her with disgust.
"I took a really long, really much needed nap." Kennet said as if it was obvious. "What are you cooking? I'm starving."
"We will feed you as soon as you tell us what's going on." Kyle said, putting a hand on his hip.
"It's my time of the month." Kennet lied. "I have never been able to control my hormones. Like, never." That was part of it. The hormones though were from the baby.
"It's true. Same with me except, I can handle my hormones." Jade looked amused.
"Where's Keith?" Kennet noticed that Keith was not present.
"He went out to get groceries." Kyle said.
Kennet felt a searing pain on the right side of her face. She heard Keith scream in her mind, HELP ME! She ran out the door and was up in the air with Kyle and Jade following her.
She touched down in their local grocery store parking lot. More lie she fell. She was three wings up when she heard a gunshot and felt a pain in her shoulder. Keith was channeling his pain so she would feel it. She looked up across the lot and saw a wrinkly black being with no wings standing over a very bloody Keith. It looked towards her and she saw its red eyes glitter. It flashed in front of her. She laid on the ground helpless as it crouched over her. Suddenly she was sprayed with black, sticky blood. Meg stood behind the black thing. A silver sword protruded from the black things chest. Kenneth's eyes rolled back in her head and she fell unconscious.
