                                                                Chapter 14

Kennet gasped as a bucket of ice cold water was dumped on her.  A wrinkly black thing was laying next to her.  She screamed and scrambled away from it.  Meg stood over her with a big plastic bucket.  She stood and saw a person laying in the parking lot about 10 wings away.  She ran over to him.  He had a long scratch over his eye.  It started just above his eyebrow and ended in the middle of his cheekbone.  It was the same place she had felt pain earlier.  She felt her face and found a scar in the same place his scratch was.  He had a bullet wound in his shoulder.  Blood soaked through his shirt and smeared his face.  He was unconscious and she was glad.  Kyle came over and picked up and arm.  Jade picked up the other and they flew towards the hospital.

"Uh, Kennet, can you walk with me to the hospital?"  Meg asked her.  Kennet nodded and they started walking down the street.  "On second thought, can you fly me?" Kennet nodded and grabbed both of her arms.  She lifted her up with difficulty.

Kennet dropped Meg 3 wings when they got to the hospital.  She quickly apologized.  They ran into the hospital.

"Only family or spouses may visit." the woman behind the desk said. never looking up from filing her nails.

"I'm Keith Jaranet's wife." Kennet said in a distressed voice.

"Room 402 on the fifth floor." The woman said in a bored voice.  Kennet ran to the stairs and flew up them a hundred miles an hour until she reached the fifth floor.

After bursting into several rooms, apologizing, then leaving, she found the room Keith was in.  She ran to his bedside and finally let the tears fall.  She grabbed his hand even though he was unconscious.  She pulled a chair up to his bed and laid her cheek on his arm.

Kennet jumped when she felt a hand on her shoulder.  A small puddle of drool had wet the hospital bed sheets.  Her right cheek felt slimy to the touch.  She wiped her face on her sleeve and looked behind her.  She saw Jade's sympathetic and somber face.   Jade welcomed her into a hug.

"It's my fault.  It's all my fault.  If I had been a more loving wife he wouldn't have gone to the store by himself." Kennet said between her sobs.

"None of this is your fault.  You couldn't have predicted that this would happen.  If you had been there you could have been killed.  I couldn't live without you." Jade said while patting her back.

"Somehow I feel responsible." Kennet said wiping her face.

"Don't." She heard a groan from above her.  Her head whipped around and she saw Keith's unblinking eyes as he stared at her.  She stood up so fast, her chair tipped backward.  She ran and threw her arms around his neck.  She leaned back and stared into his beautiful eyes.  Then she put her hands on either side of his face and kissed him softly.  She pulled back and smiled down at him.

"Do yo know how long I'll be in the hospital?" he asked her.

"The doctor said at most, a couple months." she replied in a stiff voice.

"Oh man, Meg's gonna be pissed.  So I have to go a couple months without you sleeping beside me?"

     "Sadly."

     "I missed you."

     "I know, I'm sorry."

     "It's not your fault."

"Yes, yes it is.  I should learn to control my hormones."

"Ahem." Kennet abruptly turned at the sound of someone clearing their throat.  Jade was standing behind them awkwardly.  Kennet squeezed Keith's hand one last time and said goodbye, promising to visit the next day.  She gave him one last kiss and left.

When they got home, Kennet immediately went to her bed and collapsed.  She fell into a fitful sleep after that.
