The car ride was silent. I kept my gaze fixated outside the window despite the many times Jae would glance at me.
She then handed me a towel as she drove and I took it from her. I wiped my face and rested it over my hair as Jae asked me, "He's in critical condition?"
I was silent for a moment before I decided to answer. "Jessica went home and he was passed out on the floor. I don't know anything more than that."
Jae tried to meet my gaze but I kept it outside the window. "Her mother passed away so she's alone without him."
"I'll drive faster." Jae said before speeding up the car past the speed limit.
It was raining hard but the way she drove was so smooth that it didn't bother me.

"Jessica!" Essence yells as she ran into the hospital. She saw her in the waiting room and quickly bent down to comfort her.
"What took you so long? Huh?" Jessica sniffed. "Are you alright?" Essence asked while holding her hands tightly.
Jessica shoved her hands off her lap. "What's going to happen to my dad?! What if he dies?!" She whines while pushing Essence's chest repeatedly.
Essence took her hands back into her own. "I'm sorry baby. I'm sorry," She said before pulling her into a hug. "Don't cry. It's okay-" "-How can I live without him?" Jessica mumbles against her chest.
"Don't talk like that." Essence said sternly as she pulled away from the hug. "Everything's alright. Trust me." Essence said while holding her shoulders.
