Makoto sighed. He had just put your 2-year-old son to bed again, waking up several times that night.
He stood at the side of (Son's name)'s bed. With a soft smile, he looked at (Son's name)'s innocent sleeping face. It looked exactly like yours.
With another sigh, Makoto adjusted your son's blanket and turned out the lights.
He trudged across the hallway to the bedroom you used to share. He sat at the edge of the bed and opened the dresser on the nightstand. Makoto fished out a small piece of paper and stared at it for a while.
It was a photo of you.
Makoto held back the tears and sobs, afraid that he would wake up your son. He propped the photo against the lamp on the nightstand, making sure that your face was visible.
Makoto went under the blankets and tried to fall asleep, but he couldn't.
Ever since you left 1 year ago, he hasn't been sleeping well. He got up again, heading to the bathroom. He opened a cabinet and looked for his sleeping pills. He took the designated amount and went to bed.
~~
The next morning was the perfect mixture of cloudy and sunny. So, Makoto decided to go somewhere with your son.
He woke up (Son's name) with a gently shake on his shoulder, "Hey, kiddo. It's morning time. We're gonna go somewhere today", Makoto whispered. (Son's name) raised his head from the pillow, "Where are going, daddy?", he asked curiously. Makoto gave him a small, sad smile, "Let's eat and get ready first, then I'll tell you, okay?"
(Son's name) nodded and raised his arms up. Makoto carried him to the kitchen and placed your son on his booster seat. "We gotta go quick, so today's breakfast is cereal and yogurt, okay?", Makoto got the milk out the fridge as (Son's name) cheered. Makoto chuckled and poured the milk and cereal into a small bowl.
~~
After breakfast, Makoto quickly brushed (Son's name)'s teeth and got him dressed. Makoto carried your son to the car and buckled him safe in his car seat. He got into the driver's seat and fastened his seatbelt. "Ready to go, kiddo?", he asked, starting the car. (Son's name) cheered excitedly, kicking his legs while giggling. Makoto smiled and backed out of the driveway, and sped off to his destination.
~~
Makoto parked along the sidewalk and got (Son's name) out of his car seat. He led your son up a small hill, telling him not to step on the flowers or the stones on the ground.
"We're almost there...", Makoto said quietly. (Son's name) wrapped one of his tiny hands around Makoto's finger, the other holding three small dandelions.
"Here we are", Makoto mumbled.
"Do you know who this is (Son's name)?", Makoto squatted down and pointed at the small picture on the marble stone. (Son's name) furrowed his brows and shook his head.
"It's mommy", Makoto smiled, but tears fell out of his eyes.
"M-mommy?", (Son's name) stuttered. Makoto hummed in response.
"Mommy's an angel now. She became an angel when you were born...", he said sadly. (Son's name) pouted and began sniffling. "M-mommy...?", he stuttered again. (Son's name) began to cry. Makoto, shocked at his reaction, took him into his arms and soothed him. (Son's name) signaled Makoto to put him back down. Makoto obliged.
(Son's name) gently placed the three dandelions on your headstone, "I wuv you, mommy...", he said quietly, but loud enough for Makoto to hear. Makoto's eyes widened and he immediately burst into tears.
(Son's name) made his father look up, and wiped his father's tears away with his tiny thumb. He gave his father a heartwarming smile and hugged him tightly.
Makoto remained blank for a moment, but hugged his son back. "It's time to say bye-bye to mommy, kiddo.", Makoto said. (Son's name) pouted, but stood in front of your grave.
"Bye-bye, mommy.", he said cutely. Makoto's heart melted as your son adjusted the dandelions so the wind wouldn't blow them off the headstone. Makoto carried your son, (Son's name)'s head looking over Makoto's shoulder.
He waved another good-bye to your grave.
You knew they couldn't see you, but you waved back anyways, smiling at your two favorite boys...
