For the past few days, Makoto has been in this slump. Nothing I've done so far has helped to cheer him up, but I have one more trick up my sleeve!
Because of how busy he and his parents were with Ren and Ran, the Tachibana's never had the opportunity to get a pet, other than a fish, or other low maintenance pet. So, in order to try to cheer him up, I got a kitten! Fortunately, one of my friends works at the local adoption center and helped me with the documents and everything, so the adoption process was smooth and easy!
I stopped by the pet store to grab some cat food, a few toys, and a few other items to welcome our new baby kitten before excitedly heading home. When pulled up to the driveway to our house, I noticed that his car was gone, which probably meant he went to visit his parents and the twins. It was the perfect moment to set up the surprise.
I carried the bag of items from the pet store and the pet crate inside the house, immediately heading inside the master bedroom. I gently set the carrier down and opened the cage, the pure white kitten cautiously peeking its head out before walking out completely and stretching. As I set up its bed and prepared the food in the kitchen, the kitten explored the house, settling on the armrest of the couch in the kitchen. While doing all this, I didn't hear Makoto's car pull up into the driveway and open the front door.
Makoto sighed and took off his shoes, ready to just flop on the couch and wait for me to cook dinner and cuddle. He hung his keys on the hooks on the wall and headed to the couch, closing his eyes as soon as he laid down. The kitten perked its little head up and crawled onto Makoto's chest, but the kitten was so little, Makoto didn't notice the weight. It wasn't until the kitten began to purr when Makoto opened one eye and looked at the snowball on his chest.
"(Y/N)-chan?!", Makoto called out, holding the kitten up in confusion. I ran from the kitchen to the living room, seeing Makoto cradling the kitten in his large arms. My heart melted at the sight.
"Is she ours?", Makoto asked quietly. I smiled and nodded.
"I got her just for you. I know you've been having a hard time lately and nothing was working, so this was my last resort. But seeing how happy you are just looking at her, I should've done this sooner."
Makoto gingerly pressed a kiss on the top of the kitten's head and set her down gently on the ground before engulfing my body into a tight hug.
"Thank you so much. You don't know how happy this makes me.", he mumbled into my hair. I gladly returned the hug and kissed his forehead.
"You don't have to thank me. You deserve this.", I replied.
There was a moment of silence before the kitten meowed out of jealousy. I giggled and brought her into my arms, "What are we gonna name her?"
Makoto paused, "How about Kōri?", scratching under the kitten's chin. The kitten beamed toward Makoto.
"Seems like she likes it."
"You do know what this means, right?" Makoto wrapped his arm around you. You looked at him, waiting for him to finish his thought.
"We're one step closer to starting a family."
