Chapter Nine
It had been two weeks since Mia came home from the hospital. She was still scared and slightly upset about only being to see through one eye, and it’s making me feel useless that I can’t do anything to help her out. At the hospital, a social worker visited us and advised us to have a councillor for me. I refused at first but after some persuasion from my mum, she made me get one, just to get some tips.
The councillor said that she is feeling glum and upset because she can’t walk and do whatever she wants and so because nothing can have her full attention, her attention wanders to her eye, thus making her upset. She also mentioned that as soon as her cast comes off her leg in a couple of months, she will start to adjust more to it, but she also added that I had to keep her on the straight and narrow so that she doesn’t become a recluse, seeing as she is only young.
The one thing that annoyed me was that she said she is thankful that it happened now instead of when she is a teenager, which to me sounds like she is glad that a five year old has lost 50% of her eyesight. Yeah she may not mean it like that, but when she told me she didn’t sound sorry at all, instead, it was just some ‘job’ to her and it kinda pissed me off.
“Hello baby, do you want to watch Fifi?” I asked smiling at her bored face. My mum and the stupid councillor told me to pretend that everything was okay, but I already knew that. The same as Adam and Poppy and Dean, who we all had gotten close to recently, especially Poppy…
Julie, was really worrying me. She feels so guilty about what had happened and keeps blaming herself for it, but none of it was her fault, it was the dick that didn’t stop’s fault. Thankfully, they didn’t grant him bail as Adam looked seriously pissed off when they started to think about it. According to Adam, ‘If they let him out, then tomorrow I’m going to be in there, without him’. His words. It took Poppy and myself a couple of days to calm him down and stop him from going round to the police station when they were having talks about granting him bail or not.
Whenever I was lying in bed or left to my own thoughts, which recently hasn’t been much, I can’t help but think about mine and Adam’s conversation that we had before all this happened. I feel quite selfish that I’m letting my mind wander onto something other than Mia, but the conversation really bugged me. He hasn’t mentioned it since, which makes me feel slightly rejected. He’s been with me almost 24/7 and I really need him, but he hasn’t even tried to ask me out. Maybe it’s because of the situation? I don’t know, but don’t they say, ‘Disaster’s bring people together?’ Well whatever he means, if he doesn’t ask me out soon, then I’m going to ask him out.
The end credits to Fifi and the Flowertots rolled, “Mum can I watch teletubbies?” she pleaded in her sweet and cute voice. I nodded my head and switched the channel to Cbeebies.
“Do you want a packet of crisps?” I asked as I got up off the sofa, pulling my arms out from around her carefully so that I don’t nudge her sore arm.
She nodded her head, too entranced by the four coloured beings on the tele to concentrate.
“What flavour?”
“The red ones!” she squealed, making me laugh. God I want her innocence, instead of having to deal with problems like the fact that Justin had been sleeping around the town, too bothered to text or ring me or Poppy to ask if she is okay. Part of me is thankful that he hasn’t but then I think what about when he has kids when he is older, is he still going to be like this or what?
I made myself and her a glass of orange juice each, hers way too weak and mine way too strong, and a ham buttie each. I cut Mia’s into little triangles because she liked it that way and made my way back into the living room with it all on a tray.
I placed the tray on to the coffee table and passed her the Ready Salted crisps and grabbed my Salt and Vinegar ones and sat behind her again, positioning my arms around her carefully, trying not to nudge her too much.
My phone started to vibrate on the chair arm next to me as I started to get comfortable. It was a text saying,
‘I’m coming over to yours tonight, text me when Mia has gone to sleep xx’
Aww, that is so cute! Trust him to want to come over here instead of wanting to meet me some place. It just shows how well he knows me, because until I have to go back to college in a couple of weeks, I am not leaving her side. I don’t want to be one of those clingy mother’s but I just want to attend to her every need whilst she can’t walk.
I text him back,
‘Okay then :) xx’
“Are you okay mummy?” Mia asked, looking at me slightly concerned, if she knew what that meant.
I nodded my head, “Yeah why?” I gave her, her orange juice and took a sip of mine at the same time.
“You look happy” she shrugged and faced the television instead, joining in with the theme tune of another Teletubbies show.
Hey :)
I know it’s not very long, but it was just a kind of filler chapter, I know I asked you at the beginning of this chapter but please can you vote and tell me if you think I should put it into the Watty Awards 2012 as I really need help deciding. If you don’t, please could you tell me which of my other books would be good enough for them :)
Pretty Please with a cherry on the top?!
Thankyou!
