Thomas was sitting in his office when he got the news. He was sittinf in his chair, feet propped up on his table, lazily thumbing threw a book he had randomly picked up. He stopped suddenly, when the door to his office was swung open. He glanced up. James Madison, his best friend and closest colleage was standing in the door. Normally, Thomas would've looked back down at his book, but this wasnt a normal time. James had a large frown spread across his face, his eyes drooped in the corners. This isnt Thomas's Jemmy, this isnt how James ever acted unless something was up. Thomas decided humor was the best way to try and difuse the tension. "oh don't tell me, you've got the plague?"

Thomas knew James never acted much different whwn he got a huge sickness. The man was always sick, he had a weak immune system.  James sighed and padded across the room to the front of Thomas's desk. Thomas sat up, placing the book mark in his book and setting it aside, just in time to catch the newspaper James tossed at him. He gave James a look. Honestly, who even reads the paper anymore? He shook his head at how old fashioned James could be.

Thomas straightened thw paper, and looked down at it. The headlining made his skin crawl. 'War Hero Alexander Hamilton killed in a duel by former Vice President Aaron Burr'

He looked at James, then at the whole of the office that had gathered by his door unnoticed. Thomas have a shakey laugh, hittinf the back of the paper with his hand. "s-someone finally... killed him. G-good.. fucker deserved it." Thomas set the paper down. He was still president, and despite Hamilton being fired when Adams was president, Thomas had kept close ties with him. Thomas honestpy didnt have a reason to hate him, since there was no more rivalry. Besides, his vote helped Thomas get into office.

The two started hanging out more, and had actually become close friends.

Thomas had just begun to try and move the relationship onto more intement terms. Sure, they had their heated moments, but honestly who hadn't with Alexander at one point or another? No, what Alex and Thomas had... Thomas knew that if they were together, they'd be unstopable.

James could see his eyes glaxe over, so he walked over to Thomas after shuttinf the door, going to consol him. James knelt down by Thomas and gingerly took his hand.

"where's Burr?" Thomas asked, voice barley above a whisper. "what?" James responded, even thought He knew Thomas knew he heard. "where is he? i know you heard me Madison. You've got the best ears in all of New York." Thomas looked up, anger clear in his eyes. James sighed. He should've told Thomas when they went home to Monticello. He should've waited to tell him. He shouldve-

"James." Thomas's voice broke his thoughts. Thomas needed to know, he wanted to know. Burr would never do such a thing and he wanted to know who to be mad at. Alexander, he would've done something this stupid. So Thomas had to know, so that he would know whether to be mad at a dead man, or a soon to be dead man.

"he's at home, most likely, he never clocked in." James said, watching Thomas stand as angry tears rolled down his face. He stormed out of the office, down the stairs and out to his car. He'd been to Aaron's house many times before, He knew exactly where he was going.

Thomas drove up the driveway, barley letting the wheels of his car come.to a complete stop as he shut his car off and got out. Thomas marched up to the door, and ringed the bell. He waited, and waited, and while he waited he thought. Thought about everything. Thought about what he was going to say to Burr, what he was going to do. Why he was so bent out of shape, or why he had even wanted or cared to know in the first place.

Theodosia, his wife, answered the door to a sobbing Thomas, who honestly didnt know what to think anymore. He was angry, he was sad, and he was distraught
