As much as you wish your emo, raven haired, asshole of a favourite character was compassionate, kind and loving, he's generally not. Or at least, not openly (unless you're talking about an AU (these characters are far from golden XD), then you're basically using the character's appearance and relationships).
But you know, I'm not talking about any character in particular.
Everytime you feature a character whose been developed time and time again, to the point you know them well, you have to show what the person would be like. You can't portray what you'd wish them to be like.
Keep characters in character. If that person is a douche (take me or the lovely Nagito Komaeda for example), then make sure they're a douche.
Keeping in a character trait isn't enough. I call people 'doughnuts' when they say something stupid, but that isn't a distinct characteristic.
