Chapter 1

Callie POV

"I don't understand why I have to go, it's your friend, not mine!" I complained to my mother.

"Because her children will be there, so therefore my children must be there. This is important to me, can you not understand that, Callista" she retorted while adjusting her diamond earring. I cringed at the use of my full name as she grabs a sweater before walking to the door.

Outside a car waits for us. It's Emma's car, seeing as Emma's mother would never miss out on the opportunity to socialize. I walk outside to the car where Emma sits in the back seat, her mother driving. She, like me, is dressed in jeans and a short sleeved shirt. It's only fall, not too cold but also not scorching hot out.

"I truly appreciate you driving us, Donna." My mother said, putting on her nice side. I turn to Emma and roll my eyes.

"Oh, it's really not a problem, Linda." Mrs. Allegood says as she drives off. Emma looks at me and raises her eyebrows, indicating that her mother was doing the same thing.

I'll be truthful, I'm not looking forward to this party. It'll only be a bunch of adults chatting and drinking wine while the kids are counting the number of airplanes that fly by as their entertainment. Thankfully, Emma is coming too - so at least I won't be totally alone.

The party is held at the Hemmings' house, to celebrate Mrs. Hemmings new job as a college math professor. Their house backs up to the woods, and a fence separates theirs from their neighbors. It's a largely sized house, all the houses on this cul-de-sac are.

A sign on the front door tells us to go to the backyard, where this event is being held. A large white rental tent is set up with matching white tables and chairs underneath. The only color comes from the green grass and wooden fence. As I look around, I notice my mother has already set off with Mrs. Allegood to socialize.

Time to count air planes... That is, until it rains.

"Callie!" I hear my mothers ear piercing voice yell. I groan and motion for Emma to walk over with me. She stands next to Mrs. Allegood and Mrs. Hemmings.

"Callie, this is Mrs. Hemmings and her three sons, Jack, Ben, and Luke." My mother scolds at me, telling me to be the most polite and interesting person possible.

"Hello." I say quietly, and they just nod their heads.

"Liz, congratulations!" A woman my mothers age with blonde hair joins our conversation, but all I notice is the way the Hemmings brothers' faces light up at the sound of her voice.

"Oh, why thank you Paige." Mrs. Hemmings smiles brightly.

"Hello, Mrs. O'swald. Is Reagan here?" Jack asks.

"She should be, I'm sure she's around." She looks around for Reagan, but is interrupted by a man starting to talk on the microphone, something about getting the party started.

The three boys wonder off. I couldn't help but keep my eyes on Luke, it's strange how he is in the grade above me, and his brothers look to be out of college. He glances at me, and noticing my openly staring at him, smirks before walking away.

The three mothers wonder off too, something about going to get some wine... It seems early to be drinking, considering it's only two in the afternoon. However, I guess adults do this all the time.

"We should find somewhere to sit, it's going to be a long night." Emma suggested.

"Let's sit at one of the tables away from these soon to be drunk people." I mumbled.

There was a table with little kids, and so we decided to join them. You'd be surprised how entertaining little kids are.

"Do you wanna play go-fish?" A young boy, probably 6 or so, asked.

"That depends, do you have any 5's?" I asked, and that's how it started. Of course, playing with little kids means that you absolutely have to let them win, unless you want them throwing a tantrum.

"You want to play 52 pick-up?" I asked.

"How do you play?" He asked.

I grabbed the deck of cards, shuffling them a few times.

"Tap the deck." I said, and he did. " Do you know how many cards are in this deck?" I asked, and he shook his small head 'no'. I faked a sneeze and tossed the cards out of my hands.

"There are 52 cards in a deck, and now they need to be picked up." I stated. Emma laughed, mainly at how gullible little kids are.

We were now an hour into this party, meaning that it's nearly three o'clock. As he picked up the cards, I looked around. In the corner stood Luke, looking like he's about to commit a crime. He puts his hands on top of the fence and hops over.
