Chapter 5

Emma's POV

It's Friday night and Callie and I are studying for Monday's test, as well as revising a physics test. We are at my house, the quiet environment made the studying possible to do without distractions. We are in my room, which has windows that overlook the street.

"So, should we correct the test first?" Callie asked, holding her test in her hand.

"Yeah, what are the Laws of Motion again?" I answered and asked.

"Eh, lets just google it. " she said. Nowadays, everyone googles everything.

"There's a lot of cars going past your house." She stated, looking out the window. Every few seconds a new car would pass by.

"Yeah, it happens every now and then. It could be that I live on a circle and the cars keep driving by for fun, the street is wide enough for racing. My neighbors and his friends drag race sometimes." I explained.

"Or it could be a party." I said as the thought popped Into my head after a moment of silence.

"The first law is that an object is either at rest or in constant motion. Obviously they haven't met me." I joked at myself. I was lying down on the couch -at rest- and my hands were typing away at the computer screen -in constant motion.

"Do you hear that?" Callie asked.

"Hear what?"

"Shh." She said, and faintly I could hear music playing in a house down the street.

"It's a party, nothing new." I spoke.

"I swear, if one of the songs are stuck in my head" she trailed off.

The test revisions were for extra credit, optional of course. With the help of google, we finished within twenty minutes. So, we moved on to studying for Mondays test.

"And party, and bullshit, and party and..." The music was now blaring. Louder now since -well I'm guessing- people at this party are singing along to the music.

"It's annoying." I spat out.

"It's just because we aren't at the party. Now come on, the more we study the better we will do." Callie expressed her theory.

"So, 3(x-1)+2(x-1) < 7x+7. What do we do first?" Said Callie.

"You're the one with the tutor, you tell me."

"It's only to help you study. Anyways, we first distribute the 3 to (x-1) and then the same with the 2." She explained while writing it down on the paper.

"So, 3x-3+2x-2. And then what?"

"Combine-like-terms." She spoke.

"Um, English please?" I nervously laughed.

"Combine-like-terms, as in we combine all the X's and simple numbers." She carried on.

On my paper I wrote '12x-12'.

"So like this?"

"Where'd the 12 and 12x come from?" Callie asked, looking quite confused with my answer.

"I combined 3x with 2x and 7x, then-"

"No, no, no, the 7x stays on the other side. We'll get to that later. It should be 5x-5." She corrected me.

"You said to combine ALL the similar variables, and 7x is a variable." I argued, trying to prove my point.

"Yes, but-" she started, but I cut her off.

"Exactly, so I'm right."

"No, because we treat this as if it is two separate equations. The less-than sign is treated like and equal sign, not and addition sign."

"So, 5x-5=7x-7? Then what? Ugh, this is so confusing." I groaned.

"NOW, we add 5 to both sides." Said Callie.

"So, (5x+5)+10= (7x+5)+12?" I asked after I added five to each side.

"No, remember, we have to keep the variables together. X's with X's, uh... non X's with non X's. Make sense?" Callie asked.

"Ok... So then..." I trailed off, mainly because I was so lost in what we were doing.

"So now we have 5x=7x+12, where do we go from here?"

"This is hopeless." I muttered.

"It's not hopeless, you'll get the hang of it eventually. So," she prolonged the last word, "where do we go from here?"

"Um, add 7x?" I guessed. I mean, we added 5, so we add 7x, right?

"Close, we subtract 7x."

"Ok, so -2x=12."

"Yes! There you go. Last step, what is it?" Callie spoke excitedly.

"Divide by -2?" I said.

"Yes, and X=...?"

"-6"

"Aaaaand Bingo was his name-o! Precisely!" She clapped. "The last thing we have to do is write the correct answer."

"I thought -6 was the answer." I groaned.

"It is, but we have to write it as X>-6."

"That's confusing, how do you even know this?" I asked, sitting up from my slouched sitting position.

"Mrs. Hemmings tought me." Was her answer.

"She must be a pretty good tutor."

"She is, she's really helpful." Callie smiled.

Filler chapter, yes I know... Which is why I'm putting up the next chapter too.

It picks up in the next chapter, I promise.
