Emma
"Because I'm happy!" The music was loud on this Friday night. Calum and I were dancing along to the the music, as was everyone else. Clap after clap we followed the beat.
"Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth!" He sang into my ear so that I could hear him.
When the song ended he took my hand and led me to the closed off kitchen.
"Ever drank before?" He asked. We had been here for about two hours, and I guess he was thirsty. I mean, why else would you get a drink?
"No." I answered honestly. He pours a small amount of a clear liquid before filling the red solo cup with lemonade.
"Here," he says, "you don't even taste it." He handed the cup before filling one for himself. "Try it."
I look cautiously at the drink before bringing It to my lips and taking a sip. A slight burning feeling took over my mouth and I spit the liquid back into the cup before coughing.
Calum laughed at my reaction. "You're supposed to take very small sips."
"It takes like chemicals." I choked out, causing him to laugh even more.
"When have you tasted chemicals?" He chuckled, calming down from his previous fit of laughter. I stood still, fiddling with my green shirt.
"I haven't, but-"
"I know, I was the same when I first tried it. Don't worry, my friends laughed at me too. I apologize for that, I couldn't help it."
"It's alright." I nervously chuckled.
"Small sips. Come on." He lazily slung his arm around my shoulder. We walked outside, and the chilled air nipped at my bare arms. A shiver ran down my body and he pulled me closer to him.
The home had a fire pit in the backyard, where couples were making out. Further on were the woods. I looked up at Calum, who in return glanced down at me.
"Don't worry, we aren't joining them." He gently squeezed my arm to reassure me. We walked beyond the fire pit area and into the woods.
"Are you sure this is safe? What if some psychopath attacks us? What if-" he cut me off.
"No one comes back here. They don't know about where we are going."
"Gee, that makes me feel so much better." I said flatly.
"Relax, Jared is a good friend of mine. I've been here plenty of times." He spoke.
We walked in silence for the next few minutes. The trees were fairly close together, roots sticking out of the ground. Occasionally we would come across a gnarled tree. The moon was visible due to the clear sky. When we came across a lake, it was almost surreal.
"Wait here." Calum ordered.
"Wait," I whispered, but he had already disappeared back into the woods.
Great, alone in the woods. In the movies this always ends horrifically. The monster appears out of no where and kills the girl. That's what's about to happen. I'll-
"Boo!" He shouted in my ear and I screamed.
"Don't ever do that again!" I breathed, waiting for my heart rate to slow down.
"Come on," he took my hand. We sat on a log, and he pulled a guitar out of nowhere.
"You must have planned this." I stated the obvious.
"When I heard the party was at Jared's, I couldn't resist. I thought it was clever." He defended him self.
"It's also cheesy." I chuckled.
"Face it, girls are suckers for cheesiness." He counters.
"Most of them." I admitted.
"Well, you're one one them. And speaking of cheesiness, it's time to quiet down." He took the acoustic guitar and strummed a note.
"I'm booking myself a one way flight, gotta see the color in your eyes. " he sang the rest of "I Want Crazy" by Hunter Hayes. His voice was beautiful, and my face was surely blushing.
"You..." I stuttered. "You have and amazing voice." Our eyes lock, and he leaned slightly forward.
"I know." He said, ruining the moment.
If there even was a moment.
"C'mon." He must really like that saying. He stands up, holding his hand out for me to take. We walk down the pebble shoreline, our shoes almost in the water.
"Take your shoes off, feel the water. It's not too cold." He suggested and I didn't object. For it to be the first week of November, the water was relatively warm.
"Can you skip rocks?" I asked. He leaned down and picked up a stone before throwing it.
"Nope," he answered. "How about you?"
I picked up a rock and skipped it, watching as it voiced off the water four times before falling in.
"It's easy, just flick your wrist." I tell him. He tries again, but no luck.
"Keep your elbow close to your body." I picked up another rock and demonstrated. He picked up a large rock and threw it, both of us watching as it just fell into the lake.
"I'm not very good at this." He turned to look at me, his expression going from sad, to determined, then to... Mysterious?
"What?" I asked cautiously.
"Maybe I need a rock that's already been thrown." He spoke, taking two steps into the water.
"What?" I asked, confused by what he meant.
"Come on!" There's that phrase again. "Help me find one!" He spoke excitedly.
He takes another step in, not caring that the water is up to his knees.
I rolled up my jeans and tentatively took a step into the water. By now the water reaches Calum's hips, but he doesn't seem to care that his clothes are wet.
By the time I catch up to him, he can't stand and neither can I.
"A good luck rock. One already thrown." He mused.
"What do you mean a-" I was about to finish my question when he dove under the water.
"Calum!" I yelled, thinking that he could here me. The night was quiet, though I could still hear the party music.
"Found one!" Calum breathed as he came up from the water. He held up a rock for me to see.
"Uh, great?"
"It is, watch." He threw the rock, and it skipped six times. Of course, it makes sense now. Part of this at least.
"You already knew how to, so why are we out here?" I asked, my eyebrows furrowing together. Instead of answering my question, he dove back down. I waited for him to re-appear.
I wasn't expecting for him to pull me under the surface with him. I hold my breath and squint my eyes to see Calum grinning happily. He looks up, and I follow his gaze. The moon was full, and the stars next to it shined brightly.
His hands cup both sides of my cheek, pulling my face to his. I close my eyes, feeling his soft lips on mine. I feel the sparks rush through me, and it's the most exciting and romantic feeling I have ever experienced.
Kissing Calum, it felt amazing.
