My cheeks were wet from tears, my eyes burning, my throat sore. I coughed once, the burning in my throat becoming stronger for a brief moment. Looking down to my bloody hands, the events that had happened nearly an hour ago came back to my mind once again.

Kathryn is dead.

I saw it happen with my own eyes.

It's my fault.

Ethan placed his hand on my back. "Are you okay?"

This was the third time he's asked that. Both times, I had nodded. The longer Ethan and I sat in silence, the more I thought. This time, I shook my head. "Honestly, not at all."

I glanced at Ethan, seeing his eyes red and puffy, tears still falling. He used the palm of his hand and wiped them away. He didn't want me to see him cry. I looked away quickly before Ethan saw me looking at him. My eyes made their way to Chica, who was sitting in front of me, wagging.

I lightly smiled. Dogs always did make me happier. Placing my hand on her soft head, I began to pet her, letting out a few cries. The trailer door opened and I froze.

"Everything is clear at the dock." I heard Tyler say from behind. "Did you two find anything?"

Mark, Amy, and Tyler let the door close behind them. The trailer was silent for a moment as they waited for an answer.

"Where's Kathryn?" Amy asked, ignoring the question Tyler just asked.

Ethan and I looked to each other nervously. One of us had to tell them what happened. Ethan took in a sharp breath, shifting his body to face the others.

"She....didn't...make it."

After wiping my tears again, I looked to Amy, Mark, and Tyler. They all had the same shocked expression.

Amy's eyes widened, her breaths becoming quick and heavy. "What? No, no. That can't be right. Kathryn is f-"

"Amy, calm down." Mark finally spoke up, placing his hands on Amy's small shoulders.

"She's fine! Ethan's just joking around, like always!" She shook her head, not satisfied with what she was told.

Mark kept his arms around Amy, trying to calm her. Tyler, Ethan, and I stood there, unsure what to do. Tyler looked to me, peaking his eyebrows. He knew Ethan was telling the truth, and I could tell it was hard for him to accept.

Amy saw Tyler looking at me, her chocolate eyes moving to me as well. "Ethan's joking right, (___)? She's alive! And she's perfectly fine!"

Why can't Amy just realize she's wrong?

Biting my lip, I shook my head. Telling her made me want to throw up. Amy shook her head, still not believing me. Pulling at my (h/c) hair, I nearly yelled.

"Kathryn is dead, Amy!" My lips trembled as the words left my mouth. "Her and Ethan were trapped...I couldn't save both."

Amy whimpered, falling to the floor. "So you left her to die?"

"No, I-I tried...to save her."

Ethan looked to me, then Amy. "Amy, we didn't have the time to-"

"Ethan could have managed to save himself!" She growled, her face red.

"We don't know what was happening." Mark said to Amy.

"Ethan could ha-"

I buried my face in my hands, trying to block out the yelling around me. My whole body was trembling, it felt like I couldn't breath. Everything would have been fine if I left after Ethan and I found the food. I knew I should have.

"I'm sorry." I whispered. Swinging around, I opened the door, walking out of the trailer.

A droplet of water fell onto the top of my head, followed by another, then another. Raining when something sad happened always seemed so cliche in books and movies, but it was nice to feel the water on me. It was like it was cleansing me, freeing my body from all the pain.

I was leaving the people who made me feel safe. The only ones who I could trust. My heart hurt more with each step I took. I wanted so badly to go back inside to comfort Amy, to tell her everything would be okay. Kathryn didn't have to fight to survive in this cruel world anymore; she was free.

The steady rhythm of the water on concrete was interrupted by footsteps coming towards me. They were heavy and quick, the person was clearly running.

"Where are you going?"

My legs stopped moving, my body tensing. It took everything in me to keep from running back to the place I called home at the sound of his voice. Not to the trailer, to him.

"I'm leaving."

"Why?" He questioned, his voice blocking out the sound of the rain.

"We've already lost one of us. Everything would have been fine if I had just left when I was supposed to." I said, still facing straight ahead. "Kathryn is dead because of me."

"I know you feel like it's your fault, but its not. You saved one of us, you could have let us both die, but you didn't. I've already lost Kathryn...I can't lose you too." He grabbed my wrist, turning my body so I was looking at him.

Raindrops were rolling down his face, mixing in with his tears and sweat. His bright green eyes stood out from the dark sky, they were all I could focus on.

"The undead are coming, we can't be here anymore. There are...people after me-after us. I don't know what will happen if I stay with you."

He let out a sigh before slamming his lips against mine. My eyes widened at the sudden impact, nearly pulling away. But I didn't want to. And I wasn't going to. I relaxed, closing my eyes. His hands moved to my waist, pulling me closer.

I smiled against his lips when I realized something. He was the reason I stayed at the trailer. I didn't need a place to sleep, or a group to make me feel safe. I needed him...I needed Ethan.

He separated our lips, resting his forehead against mine. "No matter what happens, we'll go through it together."

I nodded, whispering. "Okay."

I cupped Ethan's face in my hands, bringing his lips to mine again. Even while we kissed, I kept repeating his words in my head. No matter what happens, we'll go through it together.

Well this was an eventful chapter, wasn't it? I'm pretty proud of it...so yay me!

Anyways, this story is about to hit 1k and I want to celebrate. I kind of want to do a character Q&A but I'm not sure if anyone would actually participate. If you would, please tell me because it would be pretty cool to do. :)

Like always, please be sure to vote and comment.
