In the entrance of the castle, you saw Kylo Ren standing alongside his knights and your father. You huffed before entering the large foyer. Your father risked a single glance at you before looking away.
Kylo felt your presence almost immediately. He calmly met you halfway. As he did, his black mask stared daggers at you.
"You're upset," he said.
"You're observant," you muttered.
"What happened?" he asked. "I solved our problem. Chief Juban has to settle for a much different compromise now."
"Thank you," you breathed, "but this problem is personal."
"You cannot share it with me?" he asked.
"I want to," you breathed, "and it's really not a big deal to you, Commander, but-"
Your mother strode into the room without so much as a glance in your direction. You sucked in your hurt and looked at the floor. At once, Kylo understood. He moved to your side and took your arm.
"Are you ready?" he asked.
"This," you replied, sliding your arm into the crook of his, "is the only thing I'm ready for."
He seemed slightly pleased with your answer as you strode out of the castle behind your mother and father. The Knights of Ren lingered behind you, offering protection and serving as a symbol of what the marriage was really all about.
Your kingdom all came to the second day of the meeting. To them, it was mostly just a quick ceremony of getting a glimpse of their royal family. But today, they also got a glimpse of their future king.
Upon reaching the center of the balcony, you and Kylo were announced to be wed. Your people bowed at once. Some cried out in relief and happiness. Your kingdom was entirely devoted to praising the First Order.
You saw Chief Juban off to your left. He stood with the kings and emperors from the other planets. His beady brown eyes were on you the whole time, and you felt too exposed without guards at your side.
Kylo noticed how you stiffened and tried to calm you again. You gave in, letting him push whatever Force he was using into your head. It didn't hurt when he did it. It felt equivalent to a warm drink on a cold day.
The royal families were whisked away to the awning where, once again, there would be a magnificent celebration as more deals are made and armies are increased. You were to stay with Kylo all night and accept congratulations on your engagement.
"It makes you uneasy to see him," Kylo whispered to you. "You are afraid."
"Just because I don't have to marry him doesn't mean that he won't try something, anyway."
"I won't let him," he said.
"You say that, but what if he holds a dagger to my throat? Would you be willing to save me if it meant losing the strongest army in the galaxy?"
Kylo turned partly to you. You both slowed to a stop as you waited for his answer.
"Yes," he said simply.
You looked away. You both continued to walk together. The group of royal family neighbors were trailing a long ways behind, but you didn't want to risk them hearing you.
"My parents," you said, looking ahead, "they despise me. They resent having me. Especially my mother. Do you know what that's like, Commander?"
He was silent. You sighed and shook your head. Regret at bringing up his personal past filled you, and you began to wish you hadn't said a thing.
