As training went on, so did the plans. Kylo discussed with his allies and General Hux about appropriate times to attack. You were often invited to the meetings. You sat in your chair beside the Commander.
"If we attack soon, we could easily be taken down," Hux said. "They are no doubt stronger with the resources they have."
Kylo disagreed. "But if we wait, we could lose time. And your Princess's people could lose hope."
Hux looked bitter. "My princess?" he asked. "Last I checked, Ren, we obeyed the Supreme Leader only!"
Kylo's fists tightened. "Yet we need this planet and this alliance. From orders of the Leader himself. And taking out the army of Domzay is the first step to taking out the Resistance. We cannot have any threats in our way."
The allies nodded in agreement. You found yourself feeling a little useless and more than a bit insecure. Hux was growing more and more angry, and that only made your husband defensive.
"Your loyalty to your new wife is getting in our way," Hux hissed. "Perhaps you should remind yourself of what truly matters."
Kylo stood. "She is what truly matters."
Hux's jaw tightened. "Is she, Ren? For you or the Order?"
The Commander was at a loss. Of course you were more important to him. He valued his love for you over it all. You stood up and touched Kylo's hand.
"Pardon me, General," you said sternly, "but I have trained long and hard for this mission. I will not lead your soldiers into a suicide mission. We are strong, and we will take out the people of Domzay."
"And?" he scoffed, shrugging his stiff shoulders. "Then what will you do for us, Princess?"
You scowled. "I will serve loyally at my husband's side. I will see to it that he Resistance falls and order is restored in the galaxy. And I will be addressed as Lady Ren. Not Princess, not your highness. Here, I am your Lady. And only my husband and our Supreme Leader have any say in what I do."
Hux glanced at Kylo with an angry, almost embarrassed look on his pale face. He stiffened and nodded.
"Yes, Lady Ren."
You smirked and glanced towards Kylo. You couldn't see his expression, but you knew that he was proud of you. His hand ghosted to the small of your back.
The meeting was dismissed after the announcement of the date in which the Order would attack. In three days, you, the Commander, a handful of pilots, and half of the Order's greatest soldiers would set out to your planet, where you would fight for the right to your throne.
...
You opened your eyes before you were supposed to. It was early in the morning. It would be hours before Kylo would get up to begin his daily work as Commander.
You decided to get an early start on your workout. You kicked your legs out of the blankets. With a yawn, you began to pull your feet to the floor.
As you swung your bottom half out of bed, you felt a warm arm snake around your waist. You jumped slightly. Kylo pressed his face against the thin material of your nightgown. His lips brushed against the small of your back.
"Stay," he requested.
You relaxed in his hold. You let him pull you close. His face nuzzled in the crook of your neck. He breathed through your hair and shut his eyes.
"I should really start practicing my combat," you whispered.
"Hm."
"I need to continue to learn to use a staff."
"Hm."
Your lips twitched. "Kylo?"
"Yes?" he breathed.
"We only have one day," you sighed.
"I know," he said. His voice was emotionless.
"Are you... scared?"
"No," he whispered, and it sounded true. "Are you?"
"I don't think so," you said. You licked your lips. "Should I be?"
He propped himself on on his elbow. You turned on your back and looked up at his soft features that were shadowed by the dark.
"When the time comes, let yourself feel it," he said. "Your fear, your anger, your sadness. Feel it. Use it to your advantage. It will give you strength."
You nodded.
"But for now, relax," he said soothingly. He brushed his right hand up your arm. "We have a day to be together. In a day, we can be scared. For now, can't we enjoy our day?"
You smiled. "I'd like to."
He kissed your forehead. "I love you."
"And I, you," you breathed. "But how can I possibly relax? I want to practice more, Kylo. I want to ensure that I'm strong enough-"
"You are," he said. "I have never seen someone so dedicated and strong. You will do fine tomorrow."
His eyebrows furrowed. You turned towards him. His face was sad.
"What is it?" you whispered.
"Just promise me something," he pleaded gently.
"Anything," you said.
He shook his head. "Don't prove yourself a savior by risking yourself for me. If the time comes, you do what's right, even if it means leaving me behind."
You sighed. "Why do we have to talk about this now?" you asked. "Please, Kylo... I just want to spend today without discussing these horrible things."
"You're the one who wanted to prepare," he said.
"Telling me that I should leave you for dead?" you said. "That doesn't help me. That will only make me worried for you, my husband. I cannot lose you when you are all that I have."
"And you're all that I have," he said. "So imagine how I feel. If I am to die, you are going to be given my job. You will be the Commander. I just wish for you to be happy with your choices and safe in your long life."
You clung to him. "And I wish for you to be alive and with me for always," you said.
He nodded. "Okay, okay. Quiet down now. I will be with you as long as the Force wills it."
"As long as the Force wills it," you agreed.
He pulled your head down to his chest. You shut your eyes and began to pray to the Force. You hoped it would give you a long, long time with your husband.
