The harsh gaze of General Hux followed you around everywhere as you packed and prepared for war. As you took supplies or gave his troops' weapons to your people who wished to come and fight, he watched. But you didn't care. Who did he think he was, leaving your people without any supplies?
Everyone was ready for battle. You didn't want to start getting nervous, so you distracted yourself by taking care of your people. You helped them into their armor, gave fresh gauze to those who needed it, and handed out blasters. A few of them were given knives, too, but you had them trained to shoot blasters.
"Thank you, Princess," one of the men said as you handed him a blaster. "There is no one better to lead us in battle than you."
You smiled. "The honor is mine."
You glanced at his leg, which was still wrapped in gauze. He had been injured during the first fight, leaving him with a gaping wound down the length of his calf. He had almost bled to death.
"Are you sure you'll be able to run?" you asked.
"I'm sure," he said.
"I won't make you stay," you promised him, smiling.
"I'll be fine," he said.
You touched his arm. "May the Force be with you, my friend."
"As with you, your highness, Lady Ren," he said.
He smiled gratefully and slid his blaster in his belt. You patted his shoulder to send him off. As he turned to the ship, you turned around.
Kylo was standing there, mask off and face solemn. You furrowed your eyebrows as he approached you with harsh steps.
"Is everything alright?" you asked.
"Come with me," he said, lacing his fingers with yours. He pulled you away from the bustle of preparations.
He led you into the training room, where a pile of objects sat on the bench. You couldn't think of what he needed you for, and then he kissed you.
He broke away and frowned. "I want you to be safe."
"I will be," you said. "I have you."
He smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "I cannot keep you safe, ___. I can try, but I cannot promise your life is safe in my hands."
You shrugged. "I know. You're human, Kylo. I don't expect the world from you."
He reached for your arm. "I just... I want you to live a long, happy, full life."
"I'm living that life right now," you said.
"And I intend for you to keep it."
Kylo turned and grabbed the objects. Pieces of armor to fit your body where you need it most. You began to put it on under your gown. It would be easier for you to move that way.
"We don't have much time," he said, hurrying your movements. As you finished putting on armor, he reached behind him and grabbed a long staff. He handed it to you. "This is your weapon. You will also be given a blaster."
"This is mine?" you whispered.
He nodded. "I taught you to practice with one, and it's the best weapon you can use."
"Thank you," you breathed.
You hand trailed down the slick, black exterior of the metal staff. It was hard and heavy. One hit to the head with this would be fatal.
Kylo cupped your face in his hands and kissed both of your cheeks. You shut your eyes as he peppered kisses along your jawline and forehead, ending on your lips. His worry was clear in his movements, but you knew that he didn't doubt you. He doubted himself.
"I love you," he whispered.
"As I love you," you said. You looked at him sadly. "Kylo, if you're trying to say goodbye to me-"
"I don't want to say goodbye, Princess," he said, "but if I die without getting to-"
"Why are you so sure that you're going to die?" you asked. You grabbed his face in your hands. "You listen to me, Kylo Ren, and you listen well. You're not dying on me. You're just not. You and I... we are going to last for a long time. I am going to protect you."
He caught your hand against his cheek. Shutting his eyes tightly, he kissed your palm. You smiled sadly and leaned your head against his chest.
"We will live, Kylo," you whispered. "I promise. Trust the Force. What have you told me before?"
"All will be as the Force wills it," he murmured.
"Exactly. If you believe those words to be true, why do you doubt yourself, my husband?"
"Out of fear," he said. "Fear of losing you. It's the worst fear I have ever had to deal with. I'm afraid that I will be constantly tormented and distracted..."
"Well," you sighed, pulling back to look at him, "I can take care of myself. You... just focus on what you have to do, alright, Commander? And we can do this, I promise."
He shook his head. "You're more of a war leader than I can ever hope to be."
You smiled. "Everything I learned, I learned from you. You have taught me everything I know."
He kissed you again. This time it was gentle, caring. Less desperate; less of a goodbye. You felt relief that he was coming to his senses.
He took a deep breath. "They're ready for us."
You nodded.
The anxiety was starting to creep in. You were about to put yourself in the middle of a battle. A harsh, brutal war. There would be lives lost, people hurt. Homes destroyed.
But you needed to do this. For your people, for Kylo Ren, for the First Order, for yourself, and most importantly, for your future children. They needed a world that included a place where they can find refuge, safety, and a home to always come back to. No galaxy was safe with the tribe of Domzay running wild.
You and Kylo walked arm in arm onto the Finalizer. As Kylo ordered the ship to take off, you turned towards your people. They looked like real soldiers. You smiled.
"May the Force be with us," you said.
They cheered.
