He'd had to wait, and there was nothing that Tristian hated more than waiting when something was important! He'd had to make sure that the defenses he'd installed on the Rover were functional, just in case. So now, he was on his way to collect Ash.
He drove the Rover through the streets. If it wasn't for the fact that no one was around, it would almost seem like everything was normal in their neighborhood. Pulling out onto the fare-way, he passed only two other vehicles. Both had been laden down with luggage on the top racks, seats packed with people. He nodded as they drove past. Away, they were trying to get away. He wondered where away was?
The drive to Jason's wasn't long, but he lived on the opposite side of the busing lines. Once again houses popped up, this time, he could see where other survivors where, their windows were boarded up. Arriving at Jason's, he parked the Rover as close to the front door as he could get it. He would apologize for the smashed flowers afterward.
Mrs. Jaspen opened the front door. She didn't look...right...like she was frazzled around the edges.
"I put him in the back room." She was saying, mumbling under her breath. "He didn't appear well."
I watched as she unlocked the door. Why was it locked in the first place? He felt the hairs on his neck stand up. Rushing into the room, I could see Ash lying in bed, pale and sweaty. "What's happened?" I tried to question her.
The blow to my head was startling, painful! I twisted, trying to see what was happening as my body fell beneath me.
"Dad?" Ash whispered with a parched throat.
I heard the twist of the door lock, before the world turned black.
