"How could you make me rat your father out like that?" My mother snapped at me as she held my arm tightly. "We divorced for a reason, to stay away from him and what he was doing."
"How could you let someone like him roam the streets freely?" I gasped, ripping my arm from her grasp. "How could you let my sister live with a monster like him? Are you dumb?"
"I didn't want to get involved-"
"What he does, is what happened to me. He kidnaps people and sells them! And by not reporting him, you put hundreds and thousands of families in danger of going through what you just did." I scoffed as she turned her head. "He needs to go to jail-"
"If he finds out that we told on him-"
"He'll what? He's already hit me mother. What's next? Shoot me? Quite frankly, as a decent human being, I'd rather have one person die, than have hundreds of families torn apart the way we just were." I yelled and she looked at me in disbelief.
"You didn't even mind! You were off living some kind of rich girl life! Being pampered with personal stylists and parties and falling in love with some mentally screwed up psycho. I doubt you even missed us, your family, who were up day and night praying to God that you were okay." She shouted and I was taken back.
"Shawn isn't a psycho and I was not living a rich girl life. I'm sorry that I was stuck with a decent guy, a good guy. Would you like it more if I was with someone who hit me? Who called me names? Who treated me like some kind of object? Would it finally be kidnapping to you? Would you be yelling at me like this if that happened?" I found myself fuming, my hands shaking.
"If he abused me, would it be kidnapping? If it was I who called the cops and not him, would it be kidnapping? If I knew that I was put on a shelf like some kind of barbie doll for some man to buy, would it be human trafficking?" I yelled at her as anger coursed through my veins.
"Go to your room." She immediately snarled at me, pointing in the direction of my bedroom.
"Make me." I challenged her, standing my ground to show that I wasn't anywhere done with this conversation. I wasn't going to let her win just because she's my mom.
We stood eye to eye, staring at each other intently. Her arms were crossed and her lips pulled into a tight line. My arms were by my sides, my eyes glaring at her as I slowly raised a hand to my hip.
"Do not talk back to me Jennifer." She hissed at me, only I knew there was no real venom behind her words.
"Or what mother?" I pressed further, her fave growing a shade of red I've never seen before.
"Jenny?" I heard and I tore my gaze away from her cold eyes.
I turned around and saw Kendall, who stood lazily as he rubbed his eyes, a blanket in his hands. "What's going on?" He asked quietly and I pushed aside my anger.
"Nothing Kenny, come on. Let's get you back to bed since your mother didn't want you going to school today." I scoffed and he held my hands as I took him to his bedroom.
"Are you gonna be here when I wake up Jenny?" He asked me and I nodded as I tucked him in. "Promise?"
"I promise butthead." I smiled, running a hand through his hair as I heard a knock on the door.
"Can I get the d-"
"No. I'll get the door. You go to sleep mister, or else you'll be a little grumpy pants." I urged and then kissed his head before standing up, shutting his door silently.
I looked at the front door and my mom was there, asking why these people needed to talk to her daughter. To me.
"Please ma'am. I need to ask her some questions about what happened." An unfamiliar voice rang and I walked up to the door carefully.
