"The future is not inevitable. We can influence it if we know what we want it to be"
Charles Handy

The tall brunette grabbed her handbag and large folder as she made her way out of the lecture hall, a grin graced her features. Maria had never felt so certain about her future, it was though every single aspect of her life was mapped out in her brain. She knew exactly what she wanted to do, and she knew how she was going to do it. As she approached the exit she felt a faint buzzing in her pocket, she stopped at a nearby table and dropped her folder to pull her phone from her back pocket.

"Hey, Naomi!" She beamed, grabbing her folder and holding the phone to her ear with her shoulder,

"So, how was it? I wanna know everything!" Her sister asked, Maria smiled to herself,

"Honestly it was amazing! I totally get why uncle Bill runs the BAU! It's so interesting, everything they said was so fascinating. I really want to look into joining the team!" Maria gushed, she heard her sister let out a quiet chuckle,

"I'm sure uncle B would pull some strings if you asked him nicely. Come to the cafe and I'll have your usual ready." Naomi chirped, the two said their goodbyes and Maria began making her way to her truck.

When Maria arrived at the coffee shop she tugged her hair out of the ponytail it had been scraped back in and grabbed her blazer off the backseat, tugging it on before heading into the cafe. Within seconds of walking through the door Maria spotted her sister, she was practically juggling three mugs and two tea pots; Maria couldn't help but let out a small laugh.

"Hey Ria!" Her sister half yelled across the empty cafe, by this point Maria had made her way over to help her struggling sister,

"Where's Rachel? Isn't the whole point of hiring her so that you have help?" Maria questioned,

"Her dog is sick so she had to take him to the vet, but it's fine its not like I'm rushed off my feet is it?" Maria nodded,

"Do you want a hand closing up?" Naomi shook her head,

"I'm almost done now, just go and change the sign and grab a seat, I'll bring us some drinks over." She said with a smile, Maria nodded and wandered over to the door to change the sign from open to closed, but was stopped in her tracks by one of the profilers from the lecture she had attended earlier.

"Um- sorry are you closed?" He muttered and Maria shook her head, holding the door open for him,

"You're just in time, what can I get you?" Maria questioned, the tall, lanky man ordered seven coffees, Naomi made the drinks and Maria handed him the takeout trays, the man started to grab his wallet, "on the house," He raised an eyebrow in confusion, "I saw you and your team at the lecture earlier," Maria said with a grin whilst observing his face properly, his brown hair was long and scruff, his jawline was very defined, as were his cheekbones, and his eyes, well his eyes looked tired and a little bit sad, but Maria figured it was kind of to be expected in his line of work,

"Oh right, well thank you, I- um- I gotta go," He said fumbling with the coffees in the takeout trays that Maria had handed him she stepped around him and opened the door for him before taking one of the trays from his hands,

"Let me give you a hand." She said with a grin, following the profiler to the black SUV,

"Um thanks-" he paused for Maria to introduce herself,

"Maria." she said,

"Thank you Maria I'm Spencer" He said with a slight blush, she went to offer him a hand to shake, "I don't do handshakes,"  Maria blushed before shoving her hand in her pocket, slightly embarrassed, "you know the number of pathogens passed during a handshake is staggering. It's actually safer to kiss," he said blushing at his ramble, before mumbling a quick 'sorry', "anyways I better go before the coffees get cold and my team kill me." He said with a small smile, Maria waved him off before heading back inside where Nay was eagerly waiting.

"He was cute!" She said dramatically, Maria shook her head, "yes but no," Naomi raised an eyebrow, "why no?" She asked, "I'll probably never see him again!" Exclaimed Maria, "I was thinking, I have a few free days so I was thinking I might go and see Dad." As Maria spoke Naomi's facial expression changed drastically and she shook her head at Maria in disapproval,

"I am not going to see that son of a-" Maria cut her off by placing a hand on hers,

"Nay, you know that he can't help it, he's schizophrenic! I know you blame him for what happened with mum, but that wasn't him it was his illness," Naomi shook her head once again,

"Ria, don't go, please. It's coming up to her tenth anniversary, she didn't deserve what happened." Maria let out a sigh before taking a sip of her coffee, this was the only thing the two sisters ever argued about.

Ten years ago, when Maria was thirteen and Naomi was eight, their mother committed suicide. She never left a note or anything to explain why she left them, all she left her daughters was the coffee shop. In the months leading up to her death the girls' dad became violent and aggressive, whenever Naomi and Maria would get home from school he would yell at them for bringing people into his house, they never knew what was wrong- and assumed he was drunk. That was until their mother's sister, Carol, visited and believed he had paranoid schizophrenia- Carol was a psychologist so she took him with her to Vegas and put him in the best care facility she could find. Ever since her mother's death Naomi has hated her father, Maria as the older sibling tried to explain it to her as best she could, but Naomi didn't want to hear it. She is convinced that he was abusive and that their aunt Carol was covering for him. So if Maria ever goes to visit him she goes alone, but she always gives Nay the option to join.

"Maria," Nay said snapping her fingers in front of Maria,

"Huh? Sorry," she mumbled, "I really think you need to let me explain what happened with Dad, you were so young then and now you're eighteen, you're old enough to know the truth," Naomi shook her head,

"Maria. I am not having this conversation." She said firmly,

"ok, forget it, how was your day?" Maria said, swiftly changing the conversation.
