"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Martin Luther King, Jr.
The team arrived back at the office in the early evening, most of the team had decided the paperwork could wait until the morning opting instead to head home to sleep off the day. Hotch, Reid and Maria however stayed. Hotch and Reid rushed to their respective work spaces leaving Maria stood like a lemon trying to figure out where to do her paperwork. She cautiously made her way to Hotch's office before entering inquiring about a desk for her, she was oblivious to the fact her uncle was sat on the small sofa in the office,
"Is there somewhere I can do the paperwork? I don't want to steal anyone's desk," She said with a smile, Hotch informed her that the desk beside Reid was free so she turned on her heel to leave, it was only then that she spotted Bill, "Oh! Hey Uncle B!" She quickly corrected herself, "I mean- D-director, sir." He grinned at her before gesturing to Hotch,
"Don't worry about it Kiddo, I'm actually here to talk about you."
"Ah, well," Maria suddenly felt incredibly self-conscious, "I'll be going now, uh- see you later, goodnight Sir."
Maria took a seat at the desk next to Reid who didn't acknowledge her, she decided to put her headphones on so she could focus and ignore her peculiar colleague who had been acting although her presence was a major inconvenience to his day. Every once in a while Maria would find herself glancing at Hotch's office, wondering what her plan B would be if she didn't get the job. Once she finished the paperwork and packed her things away she started to head for the elevator,
"Goodnight Williams," Reid sighed and Maria was surprised by the sudden interaction,
"Goodnight, Doctor Reid." She smiled politely at him, while her mind was racing; how could he go from being a total arse during the case to being somewhat friendly? He had seen her at the worst moment of her life, and could somehow act as if it had never happened?
When she got in the elevator she was joined by Garcia, who was still as bubbly as ever, Maria admired how she dresses so cheerfully and manages to make her office seem like a fun space, considering the nature of what goes on in there,
"Hey, Newbie!" She greeted cheerfully, "how was your first day?" Maria smiled,
"It was good! I think? How are you?"
"Any day where you guys catch the bad guy is a good day in my book," Garcia grinned,
"Yeah, but they couldn't do it without you!" Maria responded,
"Thank you, I needed that. It's pretty easy to forget that the team need me just as much as Reid's crazy big brain. But hey! From working with you for just one day I can already tell that they need you here!" Penelope hesitated before stepping toward Maria, "are you like Spencer, or can I hug you?" Maria welcomed the embrace and was almost suffocated by Garica's fruity perfume, "I looked into you earlier today, I am so sorry, but I like to try and know my people. I am so sorry you haven't had it easy, but you are practically already in the BAU family now!" Maria froze and pulled herself out of the hug,
"You did what?" She felt a sudden burst of anger, "what gave you the right to do that? I suppose you know just how fucked up I am then? That both my mother and sister killed themselves, oh and that my dad was abusive but it turns out he was just mentally ill all along and none of us saw the fucking signs. I guess you'll also know that I have nothing and the one thing I have going for me is that my uncle is trying to get me a job here because he knows that if my life spirals much more I'll probably join my mum and sister. I do not have a family. Me and family do not mix, because everyone I care about either leaves or dies. So no. I am not already in the BAU family, nor will I ever be. I would appreciate it if you keep your research to yourself!" Maria's rant finished coincidentally at the same time as the elevator doors pinged open, she stormed out in a blind rage. It was only when she made it to her car and calmed down that she realised just how brutal she had been, she let out a sigh and rested her head on the steering wheel making a mental note to be sure to bring Garcia a coffee in the morning,
"Well done Maria." She grumbled to herself.
When Maria woke up the next morning she felt sick to her stomach, she had been mean, she never thought of herself as a mean person and she hated that. She drove to the coffee shop and ordered a blueberry muffin for Penelope along with her usual coffee. When she arrived at work she set off to the 'bat cave' as soon as she stepped out of the elevator she was met by Morgan's disapproving glare, she assumed that Garcia had told him about her outburst. Maria gave him a guilty smile before continuing to Garcia's office, she knocked before entering cautiously,
"Morning," she said as she put the muffin down in front of Penelope, "I'm really sorry, I don't know why I was such a bitch, I just wanted to apologise and let you know that what you saw last night was not me. I'm sorry." Penelope stood up and embraced Maria,
"When you go over to your desk there is going to be a really big latte and a slice of banana bread waiting for you, I'm sorry too - I shouldn't have gone snooping." A moment of silence passed before Maria spoke,
"Can we go out for coffee or something? I feel like I owe you," Garcia smirked in response,
"Girls night?" Maria nodded,
"Definitely."
