"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage. "
Lao Tzu

The day of the ball quickly rolled around. Hotch cleared me to get back in the field and we had a few cases and lectures. I looked at my phone: 'May 31st' - not only is today the day I dread every single year, it's the ball and honestly I don't really want to go. It's not my scene. And my mind keeps replaying what Penny had commented about Spencer's jaw dropping, I mean it's a nice dress but he wouldn't react like that because we are only friends and I don't think we will ever be anything more. Not after Maeve, but I don't think about him like that. Sure Maria. Keep telling yourself that.

I sat down with a cup of coffee and a salad as I watched the news. My phone buzzed on the coffee table.

"Williams." I stated, "hey pumpkin, I don't think I'll ever get used to you answering the phone like that." My dad chuckled.
"How are you pops?" I asked.
"I'm good pumpkin. How are you? Thought I'd call you to wish you a happy birthday. I'm sorry I'm not there, you should visit sometime if you aren't too busy for me." He half chuckled.
"Thanks dad, I'll visit next time I'm in Vegas on a case I promise." I grinned.
There was a pause for a while before he spoke again, "I sent you a present, but I don't know when it will arrive. Happy twenty fourth birthday pumpkin!" I thanked him and we chatted for a while before there was a knock at my door I quickly said bye to my dad and went to answer the door.

"Elizabeth Maria Williams why on Earth haven't you started getting ready!" Garcia half yelled as she entered my apartment.
"Because it's two o clock and it starts at seven?" I answered.
"No! You need to start getting ready now if you want to be the belle of the ball!" I sighed and decided against protesting. I hopped in the shower while Penny did her hair, I head her greet two more voices when I went back in to my room I greeted Em and JJ. The three, yes three all began curling my hair and doing my makeup.

-

"Ta dah!" Penny cheered as she showed me my hair and makeup in the mirror. My long brown hair was curled in Hollywood style curls. My makeup was pretty flawless, I had a natural smokey eye with a hint of glitter and red lipstick. The girls got ready in a fraction of the time it took them to do me. Now it was time to put the dress on, I stepped into the gown and zipped it up. Next I stepped into my strappy silver heels. There was a knock on the door I assumed it was Spence, but instead I was greeted by a delivery man who handed me a small bag. I opened the bag and spotted a card with my dad's handwriting on it, next there was a velvet box. I opened it to reveal some small diamond earrings, and diamond necklace and a small silver bracelet which I recognised to be my mum's. I put the jewellery on and checked myself one more time in the mirror.
"Maria get in here!" Garcia called. I ran in and she forced me to take a bunch of selfies with her and the girls. I put my phone in my bag and realised I was ready to go. Knock! Knock!

I answered the door to see Spencer in a suit with a bow tie that matched my dress. I examined him. His hair was messy as normal, his eyes had a small sparkle which I hadn't seen since Maeve and his smile. I've never seen Spencer smile so wide, his eyes were crinkled slightly in the corners,
"Hi, um wow. You l-look amazing-" he half stuttered.
"You look very dashing Spence." I grinned, the girls came to the door and we all left. Spence and I walking with our arms linked, I bet we look like a couple. Stop Maria!

We arrived at Rossi's mansion, of course it was being held here. I looked around and there was free flowing champagne, twinkly lights everywhere, candles scattered around, and a big dance floor in the back garden which is accompanied with a bar.
"Dave sure knows how to party!" I exclaimed, when no one replied I looked to my left to see Spencer wasn't there, I looked to my right where the girls had been  to see they weren't there either. "What the fuc-" I started but was cut off by the sudden bangs of party poppers and a chorus of "happy birthday Maria!" I relaxed instantly, it's weird I never celebrate my birthday. But here I am having a ball for my birthday.

I sat at the bar sipping on my champagne watching everyone dancing, Hotch was spinning Emily around and Penny and Morgan were dancing, JJ and Will were kissing and swaying. Leaving Rossi, Spence and I. The song ended and a slower one started, I broke into a grin when I registered Coldplay's Us Against The World. Spencer approached me cautiously, "Ria, I don't dance and I can't dance, but will you dance with me?" He offered me his hand which I accepted as we made our way to the dance floor Derek wolf whistled, which made me chuckle and Reid blush.

"Spence? Why did you want to dance if you don't like dancing?" I asked as we swayed, one of his hands was on my waist and the other was holding my hand, my free hand was resting on his back and my head was resting on his chest, "honestly?" He asked and I nodded, "I had a dream. Well actually it was a recurring dream. I was dancing with Maeve but then it turned out to be you and I guess it made me want to dance with you." I smiled and we continued to sway to the music, Spence twirled me around every so often. After us against the world another slow-ish Coldplay song started Amazing Day, I grinned and asked Spencer if we could dance to the second song.

As the night came to a close we began to head home Spence grabbed my wrist though, "Maria, I'm such a moron. I left your present at the office, do you mind if I take you there before I take you home? I'd really like you to have the present today." He explained sheepishly, "that's fine Spence."  I thanked everyone for the party and we set off to the office. We stood side by side in the elevator and I could feel Spence looking at me, "you ok?" I asked he nodded, "I am, it's just you look so beautiful Maria."
I looked up into his sparkling eyes and said, "and you Spencer Reid look extremely handsome." The doors opened and we walked to his desk he handed me a bag, I opened it and there was a selection of gifts. The first was a small scrapbook, full of photos with the team and some from my childhood which I assume Garcia found. The second was a small silver necklace with a small heart. And the third was a framed photo of us from tonight.
"These are beautiful Spence. But how did you get that picture printed and back here so soon?" I questioned and he laughed.
"A magician never tells. But I might've had help from a certain technical analyst." I giggled.
"I love them Spence thank you!" I pulled him into a hug and planted a small kiss on his cheek.

We got back in the elevator to leave and as we stood in silence I decided to thank Spence again, "Spence thank you so much! I really do appreciate it." He grinned, I noticed his bow tie was wonky so I gently straightened it I let my hands linger for a moment and he stared at me, my gaze wondered to his eyes and he leaned forward I found myself leaning into him. He gently placed a hand on my cheek he stroked it gently before closing the gap between us and planting a kiss on my lips, I kissed back and the kiss deepened. We both pulled away and blushed, he quickly leaned back in and planted another kiss on my lips. It was quick, as if it was a part of our daily routine. As if we have a lifetime of those small loving kisses. It was bliss. And it confirmed the things Garcia had hinted at and the things I was denying.
