When Jonah texts me and tells me that we need to talk, I'm immediately nervous. I think that it's a normal reaction- that statement makes every person nervous, especially over text.
"That's bad, right?" I ask Megan after I've shown her the message.
She nods and stuffs a bite of chicken into her face because we're having lunch together on Monday. "Yeah, that sounds pretty bad. No emojis or punctuation or anything. What'd you do?"
"Nothing," I say quickly. "I don't know what he could want to talk about that's so bad."
"Does he usually text like that? Without any emojis or anything? Maybe he really isn't upset, that's just how he texts and you're overthinking it."
"No, this is definitely weird," I look at the message again. The only thing that I've done wrong in our relationship is that one lunch I had with Devon but I don't see how he would know about that. "Unless he knows Devon's friends because he told people that we are getting back together."
"Wait, back up. What?" Megan raises her eyebrows at me. "Devon told people that you're getting back together? What the fuck?"
"We had lunch once because he said that he wanted to catch up but then he apparently started telling his friends that we're getting back together," I explain to her with a long sigh. "It was stupid, I know that, but it was just one lunch. And I don't know how Jonah would find out about that."
"Isn't he an engineering major?" She wonders. "Robotics... engineering... yeah, I can definitely see how he'd hear that rumor."
"Shit," I mutter when I realize that she's probably right. If this is something bad and Jonah is mad about something, that's probably exactly what it is. I guess maybe it'll be better when I'm able to tell him that it was just Devon being an asshole and I'm not actually interested in getting back together with Devon.
"You should probably go," Megan tells me. "I have to meet up with Teagan soon anyway."
"Yeah," I sigh, texting Jonah back asking him if he can meet me at my apartment in ten minutes. "Alright. I'll see you later, have fun with your girlfriend."
She waves me a goodbye as I get up from our table in the union and I head out of the building and into the numbing cold toward my apartment building right on the outside of campus. Jonah messages me saying that he's on his way and he's definitely not texting like he usually does so I'm pretty worried but I'm also hopeful. Whatever has him upset... it's probably just a misunderstanding.
Once at the apartment, when I get inside, Jonah and Lana are sitting in the living room. Lana is looking at her laptop with papers scattered around her on the couch and coffee table. Jonah is sitting in the armchair looking very unhappy. This definitely isn't good. I don't know what to say and so I just remain silent and wait for Jonah to say something first.
However, when neither one of us speak, Lana notices the tension and looks up at me. She gives me a curious look and then says, "We're presenting this film next week and I'm cramming like crazy to get everything done. If this is a tension thing, can you please do it in your room?"
"Do you want anything to eat?" I ask Jonah as he stands up from the chair.
He just starts walking toward my room down the hallway. "Nope, I'm fine."
"Cool," I sigh and then we're going into my room and I shut the door behind me so that we don't disturb Lana out in the living room. "So. What's up?"
"I was just wondering when you were going to tell me that you're getting back together with your ex?" He says and he sits down on the edge of my bed, looking at me and waiting for my response.
