As I'm slowly drawn back to reality, my dull senses begin to clear. Getting ahold of my surroundings, I'm able to open my eyes. Upon this action, I realize I'm not in the same place I was before. The bridge, the mist, the battle, it all seems to have been replaced by an ordinary room that feels familiar.
Without moving my head, I let my eyes wander around the enclosed space. Doing so, makes me come to the conclusion that I'm somehow back at Tazuna's house. This is the same room I slept in before.
'...What happened? How did I get back here?'
"So you're finally awake."
Turning to the left, I find that Kakashi sensei is the one who spoke to me.
"I'm glad to see you've woken up. You were unconscious for about an entire day." He says while seemingly smiling underneath his mask.
"...Kakashi sensei." I calmly speak in a hoarse voice, caused by the fact that I haven't spoken a word for nearly a day.
I stay silent for another moment before a sudden thought comes to mind. I gasped loudly before sitting up and shouting, "Sasuke!"
Kakashi sensei jumps in surprise by my unexpected outburst. Quickly getting up, I look directly at him.
"Where's Sasuke?! What happened to him?!" I ask with signs of impatience running across my face. I stare into his eyes hoping to find an answer, but he only gestures for me to calm down.
"Relax (Name), you shouldn't move around too much. Your chakra hasn't completely replenished yet. And Sasuke is fine. He's in the other room. Unfortunately, he's still unconscious. He hasn't woken up since the incident, but his condition is stable, so there's nothing to worry about." Kakashi explains in attempt to make me feel better.
Standing still, I take in all the information while looking down at the floor. A distant look sets in my eyes as I replay the events that took place on the bridge.
"No," I whisper at first. "This shouldn't have happened to him. He took the hit for me...while I just sat there, helpless." I state with my voice beginning to waver. "I should've done more." I finish with a tear slipping from my eye.
A newfound silence settles with in the room. It stays there for what seems to be an eternity until Kakashi interrupts.
"(Name), you did everything you could. You put your life on the line to save a comrade, and Sasuke is still alive because of that. Naruto told me everything that happened, so I already know. To put it simply, it was a life-threatening situation and you did all you could. It's not your fault this happened, so don't beat yourself up about it."
I quickly take in his words while still looking down. I give a slight nod knowing that deep down he was only telling the truth. The mission itself was too much for us to handle from the beginning. I know this and yet, I can't help but feel guilty.
"Thank you Kakashi sensei. By the way, where are the others?" I ask with curiosity finally dawning over me.
"Everyone's out at the moment. Naruto went to train and Sakura decided to join him. Tazuna and the others went to the food market, so they'll be back later."
"I'm going to see how Sasuke's doing." I say while heading towards the door.
"Alright." Kakashi sensei simply replies while pulling out his book that seems to appear from nowhere. I suddenly sweat drop after seeing this.
'Geez, he's always reading that book. What's so interesting about it, anyway?'
Quickly clearing my mind of the thought, I slide the door open and exit the room. Moving down the small corridor, I reach the next room. Standing there, I simply watch the door for a moment. Stepping a bit closer, I place my ear beside the door in order to hear any movement that might indicate that Sasuke's awake. Luckily I don't hear a thing, meaning he's still unconscious. It'd be a bit awkward if he were awake. I wouldn't know what to say.
'Ugh! Listen to myself, why am I acting so shy all of a sudden?'
Letting out a breath in order to calm myself, I slowly open the door. I quickly take a peek inside the room before entering. Closing the door silently, I calmly make my way over to Sasuke's lying figure in the center of the room. He's tucked within a comfortable looking futon and his body is covered in bandages.
His broken appearance takes me by surprise. It just looks so out of character for him. The strong, stubborn, and seemingly unbeatable Sasuke is now in a state of such vulnerability. Knowing he was taken down with such ease, it makes me feel bad for him.
Although what I feel is nothing in comparison to how he will when he wakes up. I know Sasuke, so I know he'll be hard on himself. As I look at his face, the reality of everything only seems to become clearer.
'This really happened...at least it's over.'
While that last thought crosses my mind, I immediately begin to second guess myself. Is it really over? With a life as a shinobi, we'll inevitably face danger over and over again. If its never over, than no one's ever safe. And I...can't seem to protect those I care about, but I can't let them get hurt. So I have no choice. It's a never ending battle, and I'm afraid to lose.
"Sasuke..." I whisper while hesitantly reaching for his hand.
I face downward as more tears begin to appear in my eyes.
"I've already lost all my family, and I refuse to lose anyone else...that's why next time..." I grip his hand firmly with tears falling from my eyes. "Next time, I swear I'll be the one to protect you, because...because I love you,
Sasuke Uchiha."
