I looked around the empty halls, trying to find my locker, which Is becoming difficult to find, "hey you!" a deep voice sounded, getting my attention; I turned around, seeing a guy running towards me.
The mystery guy stooped in front of me, taking a few deep breathes, before standing up straight, no trace of a smile, "so your the person everyone's talking about." the guy said, making me back up a bit, feeling imitated, "your the new colored student that's entering this fine respectful, friendly place, huh." he continued, still no trace of a smile, 'I'm going to die...damn' I thought, feeling helpless inside. The stepped closer, before a grin spread onto his face, embracing me into a hug, "welcome! It's nice to see some colored folks here, your the first one too!" the gut said, letting me go of me, 'what the fuck is going on!'.
Feeling very confused, I looked around, expecting people with bats, ready to beat me up, but saw nothing, "oh uhhhhh." I drawled out, not knowing what to say or feel, "oh! My name's Dell, Dell Richard, by the way, and you are.." He asked, smile still there, "Tala Jones." I said quickly, still feeling very confused, "do you need help with finding your locker or something?" Dell asked, checking the time on the wall, "oh y-yea, I do, can you help?" I asked nervously, looking down at my shoes again.
"Of course I will!" He said, taking my papers, and hauling me down a hall, where it said music department; I allowed him to drag me around, knowing well to not to upset him, he stopped, showing me my locker, and telling me how to open it, "thank you." I said, still looking down, knowing to never lock eyes with the white folks, "no problemo! And don't be afraid to look at me in the eyes or any other person, this is a all race school." Dell explaine, before looking at the time again, "welp I better show you where your first class should be, it's almost time to start classes." He said, pulling once more, to whatever I'm supposed to go, "you are... taking Mrs. Jinkins Math, welp looks like your stuck with her, but don't worry, I'm here too." He said, stopping by a door, with a sign saying Mrs. Jinkins, "what do you mean?" I asked, hoping it's nothing bad.
Dell looked at me, with a grim smile, already telling its not good, "well...there are some students here, that not as accepting about color folks, but...Jacky Jamison is a different story, while are trying to understand, she won't, not even when she rots in her own tomb." Dell explained, the bell ranged after he was finished speaking; a whole bunch of students started pouring out, all looking right at me, some murmuring to their friends, I followed Dell inside, as he took a seat in the back, "come on, its ok, you don't have to be nervous." he said, convincing me, I sat down next to him, feeling eyes on m, as the class starts to fill up with others. The bell ranged again, everyone now looking at the teacher, who looked close to her 80's and ready to die, before she could start, someone ran in, "I'm sorry miss, I was kept back by Mrs. Norris." she said, pulling a silky strand of blonde hair from her face, "it's okay, now have a seat." Mrs. Jinkins spoke, going back to what she was trying to say.
I got out a notebook, and started writing don what was needed, someone then tapped my shoulder, Dell giving me a note:
We don't need you niggers, messing up our domain, so
burn in hell,
love, Jacky.
Dell looked at me with a sad look, not sure I how I would react, I crumbled up the paper, tossing it to the side, going back to work, 'this is what I was afraid...I prissy little girl making threats on paper' I thought to myself, trying to concentrate on the teacher. The bell finally ringed, making everyone jump up to get their stuff, "what's your next class Tal?" Dell asked, packing his stuff as well, "art with Mr. Chance." I said, grabbing my case, before following Dell out the room, still feeling the heated stares on me, "awe man, I have music, but make sure to stay away from Jacky." Dell said seriously, "don't worry, I'll make sure to avoid her like a pack of flying bats." I said, smiling a bit, before waving goodbye.
I entered the class room, that was decorated with paper, and supplies, "ah welcome, you must be Tala Jones, I'm Mr. Chance." a young looking man said, pulling me into a hug, 'wow twice in one day', he let go of me, giving me a sketchbook, "here ya go, each student must have this for my class, and here's this. This is for our project, we will be doing for a month, and I'll be the one to pick partners." Mr. Chance explained, before letting me know where to sit.
Sitting down, I watched as the class begins to fill in, still getting stares, 'why do some of them look like their pitying me, what is something bad going to happen to me' I thought, when low and be hold, Jacky, the same girl she was supposed to be afraid (which I'm kind of is, by this point), looking down, not wanting to make any eye contact; I felt a presence in front of me, making me want to merge with the seat, "what are you doing?" Jacky sneered, as I looked dead into her bright honey brown eyes, "sitting down...in my assigned seat." I spoke softly, trying not let my voice quiver, 'what happened to not being afraid'.
She huffed in annoyance, stalking over to Mr. Chance, talking harshly to him, she finally came back, looking very irritated as she sits next to me, "okay class, I hope ya'll got your sheets, cause we're doing this project weather you like it or not, and don't you can pick your partners either." he smiled at us, making almost everyone groan silently, "stop your whining people, ok now, your isssssss....the person next to you, your instructions are on the paper." he finished, going back to whatever he was doing, I felt my blood freeze, my heart stopping a bit too long, before beating again.
I didn't dare look at her, already feeling the cold glare, "ok let's get this straight, I will be doing the work, since your people are lazy bastards, got it." she said, clearly not happy, "that's kind of impossible, we have to drawn all the things listed about our partners, and we both don't know each other clearly." I said confidently, looking at her, she looked at her paper, scowling it, "fuck." she whispered, her hands trembling, "fine, but we are doing it at your place, because my father would shot you with a shotgun." she sneered at me, looking away, trap in her own world now, 'I'm doomed, I'm utterly doomed, what the hell happened to avoiding her' I thought, feeling even more miserably.
