Alexander Hamilton stood infront of a bright red train. All around him, wizarding kids hugged their parents and climbed on the train to meet up with friends on the way to Hogwarts. He could not wait to get going.
It hadn't been that hard. Professor Dumbledore had gave very simple instructions on how to get to Platform 9 3/4. Just run into the barrier between platforms nine and ten and you were all set. He passed his very heavy trunk to a conductor and climbed on, looking for somewhere to sit.
While the Headmaster was able to accompany him to London, England, he didn't have time to escort him to Diagon Alley to help buy his school supplies. It didn't matter becuase Alexander managed all on his own. He had found the entrance to Diagon Alley and got books, robes, and a cauldron. The best part was getting his wand.
The creepy wandmaker had him go through several wands before the right one was found. "Ah yes," Ollivander had breathed excitedly as Alexander caused dark blue feathers to burst from his wand. "Aspen wood. For the strong-minded and determined. Often owners of these wands are skilled duelists and revolutionaries.
"Dragon heartstring. Bold and flamboyant magic. Thirteen inches. Quite springy. Use it well, Mr. Hamilton. Its allgiance is to you."
Mr. Ollivander's words echoed in his mind as he searched for a compartment. Use it well. He was going to do better than well. He was ready to shake off the sand of St. Criox off his boots and become someone new and better. The wizarding world will know his name. They just had to wait.
He stopped outside a compartment where only two people were sitting. A pretty girl with dark red hair and a sullen boy with stringy black hair. He opened the door and stepped in.
"Hello," he said, sticking out his hand abruptly. "My name is Alexander Hamilton. Can I sit here?"
The girl smiled and shook his hand. "Of course. I'm Lily Evans. Are you a first year?"
Alexander sat down quickly. "Yes, are you?"
"No, Severus and I are second years," Lily explained, nodding to her companion.
The pallid boy, Severus, raised his head and looked Alexander up and down with an air of examining him for worthiness. His eyes were dark as the night as even less welcoming. He didn't say any form of greeting.
Lily broke the silence. "Did your parents go to Hogwarts, Alexander?"
Even though it was an innocent question, Alexander felt himself going on the defense. "No. Is that a problem?" He glared at Severus, whose curled lip of disgust made it seem it was going to be. He was liking him less and less.
"No, of course not," Lily said quickly, her bright green eyes pinging back and forth between the two boys. "I'm muggle-born, too."
"Muggle?"
"It means your parents don't have magic," Severus snapped, speaking for the first time.
"And I suppose that's a bad thing, according to you?" Alexander stood up, his fists clenched. He didn't know magic yet but he could give someone a good punch if they deserved it. Severus plunged his hand into his robes.
"Stop!" Lily's eyes flashed angrily. "Don't cause a fight, okay? Calm down." He sat down, still fuming. "Have you heard about the Hogwarts houses?" she asked, trying to change the subject.
"No." He was getting sick of not knowing anything about Hogwarts. He needed a library and fast.
"Slytherin is the best house," Severus said, smiling slightly, pointing to the silver and green serpent symbol stitched to his school robes.
"Gryffindor is amazing too," Lily cut in, smirking at her friend. "We're the brave!" A red and gold lion shone from her robes.
"And we are the cunning!"
Alexander wasn't listening anymore to their playful banter. If Slytherin was the best, he had to get into it. No question about it. He didn't come all this way to not succeed and rise to his full potential. Whatever it took, he was going to get into right where he needed to be.
It was nightfal when the train arrived at Hogsmeade Station. As the students filled off the train, Alexander was about to follow Lily and Severus to the carriages, when a booming voice called, "Firs' years! Firs' years!"
A giant of a man stood by a squadron of small boats at the edge of the lake, waving a bright lantern. He had a wild mane of black hair and beard, but kind eyes. A large, slobbering dog stood next to him. Alexander gave the dog a pat on the head and stuck out his hand to the large man.
"Alexander Hamilton."
"I'm Hagird," the man said, surprised, yet pleased at the boy's gesture. He swallowed Alexander's hand with his own large one, pumping his entire arm up and down as he shook it. "Four ter a boat, Mr. Hamilton."
Alexander climed into a boat that already had three other first years sitting in it. He didn't say anything to them as the boats drifted across the lake toward the memerizing castle of Hogwarts.
In the entrance hall, a tall, stern-looking woman , who called herself Professor McGonagall was waiting for them. She explained about the Sorting and the importance of the four houses and how house points were earned.
"Follow me, please," she said briskly. The first years quickly followed her into the Geat Hall, where four long tables seated all the students of Hogwarts. Alexander saw Lily at one table chatting with a friend. When she caught sight of him, she waved. He returned it and looked for Severus. He was sitting at the table next to the Gryffindors, alone. His stringy hair hung in his face and he looked even more gloomy, if possible.
Professor McGonagall began calling out first years' names to have them try on the sorting hat. Alexander had a little while before she reached the H's so he let himself look around the Hall. He saw the professors' table which, among others, sat Dumbeldore, a tiny wizard shorter than him, a portly man in a velvet robe, and a man with missing limbs.
"Hamilton, Alexander!"
Alexander jumped and walked briskly to the stool. The old hat was lowered over his head and all he saw was darkness.
"Hmmmmm," an unfamiliar voice mused in his head. "Tricky, tricky."
Alexander jumped in surprise. "You can talk!"
"Of course I can. How else will I sort you?"
"I want to be in Slytherin," Alexander said. "Please?"
"Oh, yes you would do well there. Ambition and determination course through you. However..."
"What?" he asked anxiously.
"You would fit in Gryffindor, too. Bold and courageous. I believe you used to be called "little lion" by your mother?"
"How did you know that?"
"I can see right into your head. For the brief time I am here, I understand everthing about you. Oh, Ravenclaw as well. You are also witty and highly intelligent. Don't let it get to your head."
"Doubtful," Alexander smirked.
"You are quite the tricky one to sort. Now where would you succeed the most?"
"Slytherin!"
"It better be..."
AN: Where do you think he will be sorted?
