Alexander apparated in front of a cheerful, but shabby cottage on the outskirts of Godric's Hollow. Pulling out his aspen wand, he waved it in a complicated pattern, muttering a spell under his breath.
The bright, firery outline of a pheonix burned momentarily on the door before it faded and the lock clicked open. He quickly walked through the Hippogriff wallpapered front hallway to the small kitchen in the center of the house. About thirty witches and wizards were already there, including Albus Dumbledore.
The meeting of the Order of the Pheonix has just begun.
Dumbledore flicked his wand, causing little glasses of firewhiskey to appear infront of each member. "Good evening, everybody," he said cheerfully. "I'm glad we were all able to find the new meeting place after our dear Death Eater friends decided to pay a visit."
There were grumbles at this statement and Alexander smoothly took his seat between Laurens and Benedict.
"Luckily, my family's old cottage will suffice for our meetings. Remus? Will you read the order of business for tonight?"
Remus Lupin, a young, but shaby wizard rose nervously to read. There had been whisphers around the Order about him, but Alexander was never one for gossip.
"We need to discuss possible spies among Voldemort supporters such as with low-ranking Death Eaters, giants," he swallowed, "...and werewolves," he finished shakily. Many members exchanged looks. James Potter patted his friend encouragingly to continue.
"Also, there is the talk of setting an alliance with the Auror Office," he said, rushing. He sat down quickly, his face red as a beet.
"Thank you, Remus," Dumbledore said pleasantly. "I will discuss this those I think would make suffficent spies in private, just as an extra precaution. Alexander? You proposed the idea of working with the Auror Office. Please explain."
Alexander jumped up. "I was invited to work with the Aurors under George Washington by Aaron Burr," he said loudly. "I have not spoken to Washington directly, but many Aurors are interested in joining the Order. They like the idea of being under less strict regulations and I believe having many highly-skilled wizards will be beneficial to our success."
"Who?" Dumbledore asked, leaning forward.
"Mad-Eye Moody for one. You know him, of course. And several others."
"Thank you, Alexander," the old wizard smiled. "All in favor of letting the Aurors join?"
All hands went up.
Working with the Order was a thrilling experience for Alexander. As the months progressed, he wasn't doing much of the immediate fighting, which was reserved for more experienced wizards. He and his friends were in charge of sabotage and hit-and-run tactics. When they would get word through the spy network, he, Laurens, and Benedict with a few others would set traps for Death Eaters at locations who were planning to meet or murder there.
These were not your ordinary traps. These were set off with bangs and whisteles that scared you silly. Then enchanted rope or cord would bind one head to foot as the Death Eaters were taken completely by surprise. Then Alexander and his friends would throw in a few Stunning spells and the deed was done.
Any caught Death Eaters had to be alive, so the Ministry could interrogate them. Most never said a word, though, and were carted off to Azkaban.
Hamilton didn't see Mulligan or Lafayette too much. Mulligan was a spy among some Death Eaters that were low on the food chain. Lafayette was working in France most of the time, trying to get support from their Ministry.
It was all very exciting, but also tragic. Nearly everyday, they recieved word that someone in the Order did not make it. The Prewett brothers. Dorcas Meadows. The Bones family. Each report was like a wakeup call that reminded him that it was easier for death to snatch them now. Before he fell into despair, Alexander reminded himself that this is what he wanted to do. He wanted to make his mark in the world and this was how to do it.
Aaron Burr paused outside of George Washington's office door. The Head of the Auror Office was seeming to crumble under pressure. There were too many Death Eaters at times, leading Aurors to scatter, making it even harder to regroup and plan. Some had decided to join that vigilante Order that Alexander was a part of. Burr remembered his stern decline when the eager Hamilton asked him to join. They were too unoffical and secretive. Burr didn't want to do anything like that.
Burr steadied himself and knocked on Washington's door.
"Come in." Aaron walked quickly and saluted to the man sitting at his desk. George Washington peered at him over a pile of messy papers. He looked exhausted. "Who are you?"
Burr laughed, embarrassed. "Aaron Burr, sir. I'm one of the Aurors who was led by Jerry Montgomery, until he was killed." He took a deep breath. "In summary, I believe I could be of some help to you. A right-hand man, perhaps? I admire our current strategy, attacking from a distance."
"Uh huh." Washington raised an eyebrow, seemingly unimpressed.
Burr felt a trickle of sweat run down the side of his face. "I have some questions and ideas on how to defeat the Death Eaters without fleeing."
"Yes?"
"Well-."
The door opened. A familar voice called, "You wanted to see me, sir?" Burr whipped around as Hamilton walked nervously into the room.
To his astonishment, Washington stood up and fervently shook his hand. "Alexander! Come in, have you met Burr?" Hamilton turned, looking surprised to see him standing there.
"Yes," he said, his eyes dancing with amusement.
"We keep meeting," Burr sighed. He tried to regain his audience. "As I was saying-."
"Burr, close the door on your way out."
