Hamilton stood in front of his house, trying to work up the nerve to go in. How could he face Eliza now after being ordered to leave? He wasn't even sure if he was actually fired or not. Taking a dep breath, he slipped through the front door.
And had a heart attack.
Eliza was sitting in the living room, quietly reading the Prophet. She looked up and beamed. "Alexander, you're home!" She jumped up and threw her arms around his bewildered neck. "I've missed you," she murmered.
"E-eliza?" he stammered. "What are you doing up so late? You haven't been doing this since I have left, have you?" He pulled back and inspected her all over, but she looked perfectly fine. In fact, he couldn't remember a time when he had seen her so happy.
Eliza pecked him on the cheek and bustled to the kitchen to get a cup of tea for her husband. "How are you, dear?" she asked, pulling out tea bags.
Hamilton paused at the table, trying to find a way to break the news to her. "Eliza? Umm, well, Washington...sent me home." He looked away, unable to look at her reaction.
There was a long silence. "I see," Eliza said slowly, coming over with the tea. "Why?"
"Well, we had an argument and...its not important." Eliza gripped his hand and to his surprise, smiled. "Why are you smiling?"
"Because I have some news of my own to share with you and you're very lucky to hear it."
Alexander stared at her. "Are you alright?"
"Never better. How would you like having a family?"
He smiled. "Hon, you know I would love to have one. I've said it many-."
"But how would you like to have one by, say, next year?" Eliza interrupted, leaning closer. Seeing his confused expression, she laughed. "You are the smartest man I know, Alexander Hamilton. But you can be quite slow sometimes."
He was quiet as he pieced together what his wife had been saying. His eyes widened and he whirled on Eliza, who was smiling wider, if possible. "So you...?"
She nodded.
"Right now..?"
She nodded again.
"We are...?" Alexander forgot how to form complete sentences as the best news of his life had just been delivered to him.
"Yes! We are going to have a baby!" Eliza was practically glowing with delight.
Alexander hugged her. "How long have you known?"
"Close to a month. Not soon after you left for the war."
He wasn't even mad anymore that Washington sent him home. "The timing is perfect, you know?" he laughed. "I come here and find that you're pregnant the day I return and..." He trailed off as Eliza's expression changed. "Are you okay?" he asked, worried.
She looked a little guilty. "Yes," she said quietly, pulling at the strings of her dressing down. "I wrote to Washington when I found out and...told him to send you home."
All the air deflated out of his lungs. "No," Hamilton gasped. Sinking into a chair, he tried to figure it out. Eliza told Washington. The arguement was just an excuse! "You should have told me," he managed. "I would have returned in a heartbeat."
"Oh?" Eliza snapped, suddenly looking angry. "If I had written to you, asking you to come home, you would've given me ten different reasons why you should stay! You know that! I had to make sure you would listen to someone. As since I was not there in person, you would only answer to George Washington."
"That's not-."
"Its true, hon, don't try to deny it now. You want to fight but I wanted to give you the chance to meet your child before you were-were killed or something awful." She was crying now. "So don't ask for an apology. I'm not sorry!" She tried to run to their room, but Alexander caught her around the waist and she sobbed into his shoulder.
"I'm here now," he whisphered. "Will you stand being a poor man's wife?"
"I know who I married," she sniffed. "And I'm so proud of what you have done so far. Just stay alive for our child. Come home every day. That is enough. Its all I ask for."
"Its going to be a son," Alexander smiled. "And he is going to be great."
"Oh really, Alexander?" she laughed, wiping her eyes. "Already have that father's intuition? Maybe he'll look like you. Or have your smile or your mind! It would be enough for me."
Alexander was true to his word. He remined at their cottage, which they christened The Grange. He would only leave to go to meetings for the Order of the Pheonix which were sadly few and far between. Death Eater attacks on muggle-borns only increased and everyone from Dumbledore to Eliza told Alexander he needed to remain at home for his own safety. Eliza, protected with her pure-blood status, was the only candidate to venture from the home for groceries and the like.
Alexander realized he was unable to function when Eliza left to do errands. Her stomach grew as the months progressed and he feared what could befall a lone witch and her unborn child. He begged Angelica or Peggy to accompany his wife when she went out and he was able to breathe again.
And then it all fell apart.
Alexander awoke one night when he heard a crash come from the front door. "Eliza!" He frantically woke his slumbering wife. "I think there is someone in our house!" He heard hurried voices and footsteps.
Eliza was instantly awake and she and Alexander grabbed their wands. "What do we do?" she whisphered, her face pale.
"I'll find them!" A shrill woman's voice laughed. "Homenum revelio!"
A wooshing sensation washed over Alexander and he gasped, "We need to Disapparate!"
Before they could grab hands, the door to their bedroom was blasted off its hinges and three hooded figures burst into the room. Death Eaters.
"Stupefy!" the woman screamed, pointing her wand at the bed. Eliza and Alexander rolled off opposite sides of the bed, missing the red spell. The other two wizards shot spells over Alexander's head, raining wood and bits of the wall on him.
"Petrificus totalus!" Eliza hit one of them square in the chest and he kneeled over, stiff as a board.
"Run!" Alexander cried. Eliza took her chance and ran from the room.
The female Death Eater shrieked with laughter and went after her. "Come on girly!" she teased. "Don't you want to play?"
"No..." Hamilton gasped. Eliza was very talented, but she wasn't trained to fight. The remaining Death Eater blasted the bed aside and the two began to duel.
He was so quick that Alexnader had to rely on his knowledge of non-verbal spellcasting to stay on his feet. In the corner of his mind, he could hear the battle raging between Eliza and the other witch in the front hall. With an angry cry, Alexander Stunned the Death Eater, ending their fight. Without a second glance, he lept over his body and ran into the hall.
Eliza had positioned herself in the alcove of the kitchen and occasionally shot spells at the female Death Eater who laughed manically as she tore up the residence, trying to reach her. Hearing Hamilton, the woman turned and screamed, "Still alive, filthy Mudblood? Avada-!"
Eliza lept out of her hiding place and fired her spell at the witch, who was thrown backwards with a Knockback Jinx. Before she could pick herself up, the Hamiltons clasped hands and Disapparated from the house.
